Keep in mind that it's "40%" of all marriages. Not of all couples. In marriages that fail, more often than not, the two people move on to more marriages that fail. The happy couples that don't divorce have that 1 to count against the odds.
The majority of failed marriages are perpetrated by the same people over&over. It's not that "40%" of couples divorce or that there's a "40%" chance that a marriage will fail. Not even close.
