    [Upgrade] GTX 460

I current have an Nvidia GTX 460 gpu. Right now, the weakest points in my build are the mobo and cpu. I'm most likely going to buy the i5-2500K 3.30GHz processor and the ASUS P8P67 LE B3 Intel P67 Motherboard. However, I'm trying to decide what gpu to use for maxing out my graphic settings in various games (specifically games such as GW2 & SW:TOR).

Please leave your thoughts on what would be the most cost-effective and quality directed upgrade against the GTX 460. Thanks in advance!

The only real worthwhile upgrade from a GTX 460 would be a GTX 570, GTX 580, Radeon HD 6950 2GB, Radeon HD 6970.

wouldn't a second gtx 460 for sli be a good option too? That's if the psu is powerful enough and the mobo is sli compatible.

Not really a fan of SLI on mid ranged cards because if the game does not have an SLI profile available for it you're typically left with subpar performance from being limited to a single GPU essentially.

Makes sense. My bad, i didn't really consider that.

Id get the Radeon HD 6970 They are really cheap atm, Extremely fast memory and it is almost the same as a GTX 580 for hundreds of dollars cheaper.

So between the GTX 570 and 580, which is more cost-effective when taking into consideration what I want to play (MMO's mostly)? It's not like they require the graphical intensity of other single-player games, and I'm simply asking because one is $300 and the other is $450-500~.

    **Edit**

I used to use a Radeon card years ago, (ATI Radeon 9800 GTX), and I was put off by those cards because of lackluster customer support. That doesn't mean to say I won't give Radeon another shot, I'd just have to convince myself the benefit out ways my prejudice lmao.

I use to hate ATI as well They used to be kinda shit and thier support was terrible. But that has changed in the last few years. Its your rig do what u want but I'd say do not buy the GTX 580 it is way over priced to get like an xtra 4 fps on most high end games.

For most MMO's GTX 570 will be a great choice. You might want to consider getting a SSD instead of spending more money on a 580.

I play wow at its max with a i5 750 and a GTX 560. so with a i5 2500k and a GTX 570 you would do minimal the same

This is pretty neat, I'm actually in the same boat as you.

Bought RAM, and a new motherboard. Going to buy the i5-2500k as well with an aftermarket cooler for some overclocking after the weekend.

I just got my mobo in the mail from Newegg today

I currently have a 470 GTX and I decided to wait until the new series comes out before I upgrade. The min system specs for SWTOR are reaaally low.

Going from a 400 series to a 500 series card in a game that's not very taxing on your system anyways isn't really worthwhile. I'd wait.

Like others have said, maybe you could consider investing in a SSD. I got one but it's not hooked up yet, I'm stoked to give it a shot.

If I was in this situation, then i would use the 460/470 till later this year and buy a GTX660 / 670.

Difference between 4xx and 5xx isn't that much. In numbers perhaps, but in front of your eyes... nah.

Always skip 1 gpu generation minimum (unless you have too much money *holds up hands*).

The 460 is fine. It'll run anything you throw at it. Upgrade the rest of your rig a little further.

If you are only playing mmo's then your 460 will be fine for a while. The i5 2500k, mobo, and an SSD would be a good upgrade. GTX 570 / ATI 6970 or higher is overkill for an mmo.

That this thread even exists is a testament to excellent marketing departments.

I've only had a 460 for 9 months. It's a great card, even today. If you have extra money after you upgrade your CPU, go buy some ice cream. Or a lap dance.

Thanks for the advice. I think then I'll stick with the 460 and wait till the next generation. Side question however... what SSD would yall suggest? I've always been told Intel makes the best, but I have no personal experience. Again, thanks for the gpu advice everyone.

Just look at the latest info at anandtech.com, that guy's pretty good with his ssd reviews.

Right now, OCZ makes the fastest but least reliable. Intel and Crucial are both great. The Intel 320s have a small problem that should be fixed soon, but the 510s are very good.

Actually Mushkin makes the fastest followed by Corsair. Both of them are also far more reliable than OCZ along with outperforming the OCZ.

Hmm. I've never seen the Mushkins before. They look like they'd be faster than the OCZs, but the bench I saw for the Corsair Force GTs saw them on par with the Vertex 3, so the Vertex 3 MAX should outperform it.

I'm not sold on the better reliability yet, since they're still using the same controller as the OCZs. I'll look into it though.

The major problem with the OCZ's is the firmware, not the controller itself. Not to mention Mushkin's customer service is superior to OCZ's and they off Advanced replacement.
