WoW on Ubuntu 11.04, any one else out there?

Hey guys, long term reader, new poster here

I was hoping for some insight, or help, regarding a problem i got with WoW when im running Ubuntu 11.04.
Problem is the game often crashes the computer, it just completly freeze up all of a sudden with no prior warning. And i was wondering if any one else has experienced this, and found a soloution for it?

The crashes also happen with very unpredicable time intervals, some times after just a few minutes, other days it wont crash at all :S

Because the computer crashes, i never get to see any error messages, and thus im not sure if the problem is with WoW, Ubuntu or Wine (Current beta package)
My software is all updated ofcource.

I never had this problem when running earlier versions of Ubuntu, even 10.10 worked perfectly, and so did Linux Mint, so i suspect that Ubuntu 11.04 is to blame for this.

For the record, i dont have a Windows licens, nor do i want to use windows, so this is not a soloution.

    Regards
    Buffbat

More details would be nice. Like is it a laptop with Intel graphics or a desktop you built? I run 11.04 with the latest beta of Wine and run the game flawlessly. Are you trying to run WoW in OpenGL or use DirectX9? Simple things like that could cause some bad reactions.

Also check the log file viewer to see if that gives any insight.

This has been a problem since the last update to wine, mines been doing that a lot lately. I've stopped using wow in ubuntu, hoping that they fix it soonish.

    Sorry for the missing information

Its a laptop, with a 8600M nvidia graphics card. Running with propetary driver. Not sure how to spell that word.

I always run the game in opengl, as it tends to run more smoothly FPS wise, but maybe i should give directx a shot.

Something I read on the Ubuntu forums was to install DirectX 9 in Wine. I did that and it actually made a vast improvement with my FPS not running in OpenGL.

Not really a great suggestion. Why would someone want to spend a fortune buying a Mac to use OSX when they're using a free OS to begin with?

That the entire machine locks up seems to hint to there being a GPU driver related issue. Try to obtain an older driver package - its not uncommon that these work better with older cards.

Actually that isn't a bad suggestion. Might just need to completely remove the nVidia drivers and reinstall them. I remember having to do that when I first installed Ubuntu on my desktop.

    1. That was a joke for "don't want to use windows as a solution"
    2. He plays on laptop - MacBooks are not that expensive (especially with same specs as his laptop).
    3. There's a Mac version of WoW

    1. Bad joke. Plus was not helpful to his issue.
    2. Completely wrong. Macs are considerably more expensive. The cheapest MacBook Pro is $1199 retail and it's a 13" screen. I can get a 17" laptop with better specs for that price. If you want to go cheaper with MacBook then you have to go with the Air which is a 11" and 13" screen again.
    3. WoW runs perfectly fine in Linux with Wine.

    1. Subjective. And helpful - buying mac solves the problem.
    2. First of all... research it before saying anything:
    a. MacBookPro17 ($2499) http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/specs-17inch.html
    b. Samsung gaming monster ($2600) http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/18/s...us-size-and-s/ But it's not out yet.
    c. Yeah, Samsung has more RAM, more Video Memory and a BR drive. And it costs a bit more. Remove that and its price would be similar to that of Mac's
    d. I wasn't suggesting to buy a top MacBook anyway. A used MacBook with SIMILAR specs to his current laptop will be a lot cheaper.
    3. Do not lie. This thread is an indication that you are wrong.

Hooray, another computer thread derailing into Mac Vs. Windows Vs. w/e.

Like others have said, try checking error logs and such for some insight.

Uhm, you're completely ignoring the difference in that one has a HD6750 - and the other a HD6970. Thats not exactly trivial. Why are you even bringing these machines up?

    1. Not subjective. You stated to solve his problem by avoiding the problem altogether. In fact just ignoring it.
    2. First off, you're way off.
    a. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834200295 compared to your MacBook Pro 17".
    b. A $1539 Dell Alienware 17" compared to the $2499 Apple MacBook Pro 17" with almost identical specs is proof that Apple is considerably more expensive.
    c. You were wrong.
    3. I run Ubuntu 11.04. I run WoW in Ubuntu 11.04. I have no issues running WoW in Ubuntu 11.04. I did not lie. You are wrong.

Yeah I knew it was cheap despite that fact that I haven't paid for one in years. Technet subscription that I get for free sees to that.

    @ OP

I recall another issue with WoW running on my work laptop in Ubuntu. Had something to do with Wine though. I removed Wine and installed it over again and that did the trick.

    Thanks for the advice guys

Ill give DirectX a try later to night, if that dosent do it, ill go for an older graphics driver and try reinstalling wine

Hope that will do the trick.

Sorry for starting a Windows/Mac/linux war here, i did not mean to do so, i just simply prefer Linux.
