    Alienware... Worth it?

Hey all, i'm currently searching for a new gaming laptop, primarily for Warcraft to be run smoothly as it needs to be raid worthy but also something that will last a fair bit. I'm not the greatest at determining what hardwear is best but obviously i want something that will do the above and have a fair amount of memory. From searching around, i can't seem to stop going back and looking at the Alienware M17x

    http://www.dell.com/uk/p/alienware-m...enware-m17x-r3

Now, the price is pushing it and is probably the limit that i want to pay so i was wondering,
    1) is there anyone out there using Alienware who would reccommend it so highly that it's worth me parting with my money for.
    2) is there anyone who possibly knows of any laptops with roughly the same hardware for a cheaper price.

I'm very aware that Alienware is expensive mainly because of the brand and the fact they are so damn sexy, and the reason i'm looking at the M17x as opposed to the M14x is simply because of the screen size. Also please be aware i'm from the UK and i believe Alien are a lot cheaper in the US.

    Many thanks!

Now I don't know a great lot about laptops but I'm sure you can get a laptop with better/equal performance for the same price.

They are good if you want an overpriced computer that you can brag to your friends about, but if your looking for a reasonable price + performance ispano has some good links you should look at.

As others have said, Alienware PCs aren't worth it. You'd be better off getting a Sager or Asus, as you'd be able to get more for that price. Then again, I'm a little fuzzy on the GBP > USD exhange rate.

Alienware you pay more for the name than the actual computer, they tend to be quite overpriced for what you want. As a few have recommend a Asus laptop is a good choice I got one for playing away from home and I was more than happy with the performance. There are also many other laptops where you can get equal or better performance for a cheaper price.

    This thread again...

    Alienware is good.
    Alienware is overpriced.

    Yes, they will game well.
Yes, you can get a smaller company laptop for cheaper with the same parts.

Take a look at these sites indeed. I just fiddled around there a bit and a laptop with the exact same hardware as an Alienware costs 300 less at kobaltcomputers.co.uk. Haven't really tried pcspecialist.co.uk yet.

Sager ships to pretty much everywhere too I discovered...

Yeah, and it's likely cheaper to just find a Clevo retailer in or near your country, like the two I linked.

I'll get back to you once I figure out where they ship to. There was an important reason I mentioned "pretty much everywhere" >>

Just saying since Clevo = Sager. Kobalt seems to be closer to Origin here in the states than a standard reseller, but both those companies use Clevo Chassis. Same as Sager does.

Kobalt was more expensive than Sager (yes, with shipping) for me, and pcspecialist only ships to UK. Though the latter is very nice for OP.

  14. #14
Yeah Kobalt is more like Origin. They customize the laptop quite a bit more, like changing the logo to theirs and other things. Origin models are quite a bit more expensive than other Sager resellers in the US as well.

So I thought I'd do a rundown of how they compared for me. Mileage may vary.

    Specs:
    15.6" screen
    i7 2630QM
    GTX 555M
    4GB RAM
    120GB SSD
    Windows 7 Home Premium

    Cost, with shipping
    Sager: $1,645.46 = 8,836.12 NOK
    Kobalt: £877.17 = 7,709.81 NOK
Deviltech.de: €1,100 = 8,554.42 NOK (Uncertain. I gave up when prompted to log in.)

Doesn't take a genius to notice that my earlier statement was wrong. I did not remember the prices correctly. My bad.

    to OP: absolutely not

Its not worth it.I made the mistake of purchasing one last year and while they are very nice looking they are also horribly overpriced.I wish i just had invested in a desktop instead

Go ASUS. I'm not sure which model exactly but I was messing around on a 17" at PAX this weekend and it was chewing through Dirt3 better than my computer at home (i7 920, 512mb 4870, 6gb ram). ya, they're big, but any 15"+ laptop is going to be big and heavy
