My computer detects a monitor that is not plugged in

When I view my current displays I see my active monitor, and a second monitor which is not plugged In. When i try to actually plug in my second monitor it is not detected because the monitor that does not exist is being shown as active. Anyone know what is going on?

I would go into device manager and try to uninstall the second one, perhaps that will help, what video card are you using? also what type of cables are you using for the two monitors? vga, dvi, hdmi? is your resolution proper for two screens?

from personal experience problems with monitors are usually a small overlooked detail, hope this helps.

I am using a ATI Radeon 4350. I am using VGA on my main monitor and hdmi on the second. My resolution is proper for my monitors. It worked fine before.
