Thread: Spend my money!

    Spend my money!

So I have this pretty "meh" prebuilt HP that's coming up on 3 years old and I figure it's high time I replace it. It still works and all, but I could definately do better and I have about $2000 or so to work with. The thing is I know next-to-squat about this kind of stuff. I'm looking to buy the parts from newegg.ca but links from newegg.com are fine, they pretty much carry the same stuff.

    So far I got:

    intel i7 2600k
    windows 7 64-bit

Leaving $1550 or so after shipping and stuff for:

    A motherboard
RAM, looking for around 8gb. Trying to stay away from GSkill after reading that people had to RMA when they went to add more RAM that wouldn't work with their older stuff.
Power supply. I'd rather put off getting a new graphics card than skimp on the PSU.
Graphics card better than a GTX 460.
    A case. Something sexy.
HDD. I'd probably screw a SSD so I don't even want to bother with one.
Blue ray burner if there's money left for it. If not a DVD burner will do.
EDIT: And an after-market cooler for the CPU.

I'll be keeping my old moniter, keyboard and mouse for now. And I'd like to get 60fps in 25 man raids at 1680x1050 res.

    Thanks.

is this purely for gaming, if so what games are/will you play?
if not, what else do you intend to do with the rig?
    do you FRAPS?

No FRAPS, and WoW would me the most intensive thing I'd be putting it through.

then i'd definitly go for an aftermarket cooler on the 2500K and probably SLI 560's so you dont pop under 45 frames with fraps running.

Are you looking for something to show off or just to be efficient?
Are you planning on overclocking or is stock cooling fine?
Just some things to think about and factor in

    in that case

    mobo - MSi P67 - $125.00 USD
    cpu - i5 2500k - $220.00 USD
    RAM - 8GB 1600MHz vengeance low profile - $53.00 USD
    HDD - Samsung Spinpoint F3 - $60.00 USD
    GPU - GTX 560 Ti - $260.00 USD
    PSU - Corsair 650w 80+ modular - $110.00 USD
Windows 7 home professional OEM - $100.00 USD
    heatsink - NH-D14 - $75.00 USD
    case - HAF 932 - $160.00 USD
    blu-ray burner - lite-on - $95.00 USD
    dvd burner - Lite-on $24.00 USD

Get yourself a new HD monitor. You will regret not doing so.

Consider it a good investment. use your current as a secondary, and the new as your primary.

    OP said no to fraps.

I'm looking for something that'll be viable for the next 3 or 4 years.
And I'm probably going to take a crack at overclocking since the 2600k has so much head room.

Hmmm, i'd think it better to just go with a beefier card? WoW doesn't do SLI/Xfire and the OP's mentioned this is the most intensive thing he's running. He also states no fraps so i'd think adding a second card in SLI that's not going to be used for anything is a BIT wasteful?

He says all this in the post you quoted then proceeded to ignore.

precisely. either a single GTX 560 Ti, or a single GTX 570 if OP decides to splurge. The build I linked is MORE than enough if WoW is the most intensive thing OP plans to use it for.

Even if he wanted to Fraps, a graphics card has ZERO inpact on your FPS while frapsing.
The only real relevant factors are CPU and HDD's.

I agree on the 2500K part over the 2600K though.

He has already bought the 2600k.
Uggorthaholy's build is really good (and he's really right about the HD screen. I'll also recommend the Dell monitor), but the DVD burner isn't needed since there was room for a BD-burner.

NCIX.com if you're buying in Canada. A lot of stock and great pricing, and instant price matching. Highly suggest em.

Weekly specials are insane as well.

Yup, I just put both in, in case the OP decided to squeeze more monitor deliciousness in, or a bigger GPU instead of the BD.
