I enjoyed it, but that was in large part due to playing with my friends in college. It's primarily a PvP game, if I had to categorize it, and not really an MMO.
Its very fun. But after you beat all the campaigns with multiple characters, all thats really left is pvp, but the pvp is much more fun than warcrafts. Especially fort aspenwood.
It's a very good game, but its time has long past. The PvP balance is pretty spotty these days (although there have been some interesting changes / improvements over the last year or two), and the PvE game is mostly over with except for some minor revamps / new content updates that are trickling out periodically as part of the build-up to GW2.
There's not alot to do except PvP or grind titles/achievements/vanity stuff once you sail through the PvE campaigns. However, it's alot of fun and I enjoyed my time with it. Don't expect miracles, but it is worth a look.
On sites like IGN and Gamespot .. Guild Wars has a high rating.

Of course the game could be improved, which is why they made a Guild Wars 2. Give it a shot if you want, but if you don't like it don't assume you will dislike GW2.. it is like a whole new game basically.
From the people I've known who've played it, it's been a love it or hate it kind of thing. Some people just simply cannot deal with the gameplay, which leaves something to be desired in my eyes. It's got great campaigns and I really like the story, but sometimes I feel limited when I play it and it feels clunky. Still, it is an older game, and I try to remember that. Besides, what they want to improve, they're improving in GW2, which I also thing looks amazing. GW1 wasn't a real MMO, so it's not something that I'd really play after I beat all the content. GW2, on the other hand, is an MMO.
GW is a "real" MMO given the strict definition of MMO, only difference with most other MMOs is that you usually had to be in (instanced) outposts to meet other people, meaning no world pvp or random player meeting while wandering in an exploration area.
then again, if you wanted PvP, you could have plenty under multiple forms.
The first Guild Wars was pretty good. Idk how it would be just jumping into now though. The community is pretty small so the guild experience of the game may not really exist anymore. But luckily this game doesn't require a lot of people to at least get through the story mode so it shouldn't be a problem.
Pick one up and see if you like it. You can get all three on Amazon for like 30 bucks or just the first one(which imo is the best of the three) for 20.
given the fact that MMO(RPG) means Massively Multiplayer Online, GW fits the definition, be it with instanced outposts (our so called disctricts) or not doesn't change anything.
just because the standard MMO(RPG) model uses a single world instance per server doesn't change the actual significance of MMO.
I played it for around 2-3 years, the best thing about it for me was it was free. I can handle paying subscriptions but i could just come back and play when ever i wanted without going through the hastle of buying time. It was my first MMO and it got me into it, i played with a friend and i just didn't ever get bored, i really did love it.
When I quit WoW, I picked GW1 back up. Given the current state of WoW, in my opinion GW1 is significantly better.
Would you say World of Warcraft is not a real MMORPG because you are split up across over 500 different servers (and that's just for EU/NA)?
In Guild Wars everyone is split up across 100 different outposts, but everyone plays on the same server. So when you think about it, Guild Wars is even more of an MMORPG than World of Warcraft because instead of being able to play with 2000 people on your server, you are able to play with everyone who bought the game. And with 7 Million copies sold that is an awesome technological feat.
it was really fun but it was so instanced that it was hardly an "mmo" as much as it was a great rpg
