No fair, Well! D:
Okay, I take that back. Thanks! <3 <3 <3
Well guys we got 2 leaders and 1 maybe so far and we cant even yet agree on the rules...
No switching works in the anime, but they tend to do impossible stuff there which can't be done in game (shoot lightingbolt on the ground to throw rocks and stuff at enemy).
Right I'm all for this idea, and as I said I'm interested in being a gym leader. However I am off out and will be away from any form of computer (bar my phone) pretty much until monday morning - as this thread will be 50+ pages by then I'll miss a lot of this discussion. Could I ask that when this is somewhat decided upon that someone PM me with where we're at etc? I'll try and check my PM's periodically tonight and tomorrow to get back to anyone etc =)
I need a type guys. You cant just say er Gym Leader and then some1 claims your type and your like eh now i dont wanna anymore
Well is the best! I now has a shiny Metagross. <3
I disagree with leaders not being able to switch as well, especially after seeing one part of the reason being that they don't do it ingame so it's somewhat canon. I've had leaders switch pokemon plenty times in the past, may not happen often but it definitely does happen.
I think 3v3 for leaders is the best personally and adds consistency, but maybe make it best 2 out of 3 or something. Maybe challengers pick 6 pokemon at the start, all gym/E4 battles are 3v3, then the champion fight is 6v6. That way challengers have to rely on a balanced team rather than having ~10 pokemon to choose from and being able to use gimmicks/hard counter gyms.
The only real rule for gym leaders in general is to be of a mono-type. That alone is already such a huge disadvantage that limiting the gym leaders even more in anyway possible is beyond ridiculous imo.
As for the 3v3 or 6v6 (or even other) format. The reason I'd want to have more pokemon is to cover weaknesses. Let's say I'm flying, I'd definitly want a gliscor to soak electric attacks. Then something to soak ice attacks and rock attacks too. Oh but I also need a rapid spinner or defogger because stealth rocks would rip through my team. Offensively I'll definitly need a fire attack or fighting for steel/rock types. Also preferably a ground attack for electric. Etc. Etc.
Ofcourse if you're electric type for example, all you need to care for is ground and grass really, but not all types have that luxury.

I didn't want to mention this because I wasn't sure, but I thought this has happened to me in the past as well.
Most of modern gyms consist of 3 mons to keep the fight more dynamic and meaningful. I only added my reasoning to it.
It also makes it feel different from typical 6v6 trainer fight. If you're gonna remove all the details about gym fights and only keep the type rule, the charm is lost.
And I want to at least try out 'set' rule. If it won't work out for lots of battles, we can always lift it.
No need to advertise it that much
Just saying thank you and leaving a mystery around it like our Great Prophet Tahuun did, is enough
But now here comes the Creator to put Order in the Gym business:
Being the lore that I am, I feel that everyone needs to read the following.
Taken from bulbapedia at linky.A Gym (Japanese: ジム Gym) is a place where Pokémon Trainers go to train their Pokémon. Just like real life gymnasiums, where one can go to work out and build physical strength, Pokémon Gyms are places where Trainers can go to sharpen their battling skills and where their Pokémon can go to gain experience.
Often specializing in a particular type, Gyms create an environment which allows Trainers to test both their skills and Pokémon against those of others. The most powerful Trainer in a given Gym is called the Gym Leader, who is revered by both the lower-ranking members of the Gym and local fans.
With that said, and if we really want to make this count, we should follow the following philosophy and format:
Gym Leaders specialise in a specific type and the challengers can be (or not) new players in the competitive metagame (which is globally set in stone by Smogon) who wish to learn more about the specific types. My opinion on the issue of pseudo-legendaries is simple: they are allowed as long as they are not banned to Ubers by Smogon. The reasoning is also simple: Since, at least I, want this to be a teaching ground for youngsters and new people around the metagame, it would be great to have them fight against pokemon that are used a lot in battles by players, to familiarise themselves with the movesets. Lore-wise this is pretty much ok, since there are gym leaders who used legendaries even against Ash (like Articuno).
Additionally, standard smogon rules should always apply. This includes all clauses, like sleep, species and all other clauses. This is because, again, at least am aiming into showing people how certain pokemon are used in the metagame. Because of that, switching is not allowed for the Gym Leader. No challenger can pass to the next pokemon of the Gym Leader, unless they beat it. Also, leaders in Gyms, never switch out lore-wise, so that's that. It should be a 3 on 3.
I will take the Fairy Gym.
Yay thanks Klada
Well has spoken.
I'm not sure if I'm active enough to be a gym leader
1. Articuno was used by a Frontie Brain and was it ever confirmed that he captured it instead of that he just liked him and sticked around?
2. No switching is stupid and mono-type already gimps you enough as is. you say you wanna teach people Competetive and the not teach them about the most important part?
3. I'm fine with a 3v3 format, as it also makes the 12-15 pokemon for the challenger rule a bit more plausible then when they have to face 6 in every gym.
