The poke transfer lab opens after you get the national dex, which is when you beat the pokemon league for the first time. So you won't be able to start with your Absol.
The gameplay, however, is great. The best in the series, alongside or possibly ahead of HG/SS. Skelington thought that G5 pokemon were kind of meh, but don't let that discourage you. He likes a lot of them now. The games are worth getting if you enjoyed other games.

Yeah, will prolly give it a shot, i played every generation outside HG/SS, that are remakes anyway so i def like the games . Just sparked an interest for Pokémon again recently after a couple of years, so i skipped those.

Best Per Type, here we go:

Fire: Charizard. Cant beat it. Arcanine is a close second.
Water: Gyarados OR Milotic. Love em both.
Grass: Venusaur. No reason to explain this.
Electric: Electivire. I dunno why, but i love this pokemon.
Ground: Rhyperior/Rhydon.
Rock: Rampardos.
Steel: Lucario. Tough one though; Scizor, Metagross and Aggron are close behind.
Fighting: (cant do Lucario again?) Gallade.
Psychic: Alakazam. Easy.
Dark: Weavile or Umbreon.
Ghost: Dusknoir. I loved Mystery Dungeon, made me want him on my team, and loved him ever since.
Poison: Seviper. Its a snake. With fangs. And its name backwards isn't Cobra with a K.
Flying: My favorite type because of the variety.. Hm.. Altaria or Tropius.
Bug: Scizor or Volcarona
Normal: EEVEE! By far my favorite.
Ice: Dewgong or Spheal. I refuse to acknowledge Vanilluxe.
Dragon: Dragonite. Cant beat that bamf.
