    Chance for DAOC to return?

DAOC (Dark Age of Camelot) has been undeniably the best PVP MMORPG for the last ten years. Through ups and downs, DAOC has always been a popular (not as much anymore) and extremely fun game. Personally, I played DAOC for 8 years, and I loved every moment, however the lack of community has caused a recent problem. Only one server now, but it has 4k+ players on all the time.

As a long time WoW player, I feel the game is dying. Whether or not Blizzard will admit to it, their failures lead to loss of subscribers. I quit officially two days ago after I ran out of will to play the game. I had a very large issue with Game Masters and realized that at the end of the day, I don't play this game enough to pay a company that clearly doesn't care about you, $15 a month.

A month before Cataclysm I returned to DAOC for little over a month and enjoyed every moment of it. I only returned (back to WoW) due to family members wanting to stay with WoW, and I had a guild who was actively trying to kill H-LK (we did it before Cata.. yay?) and I played both before turning my DAOC account off due to not wanting to pay $30 a month when I was putting more time into WoW.

At the end of the day, I think WoW is dying and DAOC has a chance to revive. Arguably the best PVP game due to the amazing keep warfare, and then RvR (Realm vs Realm, as there are three factions instead of two). Dark Age also has amazing leveling systems, where you can level from 1-50 in less than 20 hours if you have friends, and everyone in the community will bring along 'new-players' when helping friends.

With the rumors that Byron (Reckful) has rolled on DAOC, would any of you former players return, or would any of you actually play DAOC seeing how you don't actually have to pay for the expansions? If so, tell us why so that maybe we can open the gate to new players, or people who are gradually falling off the 'WoW-Train' to join a new game, and furthermore develop the DAOC community more. And if your answer is 'no'.. Why not?

So you feel a game is dying, so you go back to a game that is more-or-less dead? Interesting.... Anyways, seeing as Mythic (the DaOC guys) went on to make Warhammer Online, I'm fairly sure DaOC won't make a comeback, a shame I suppose, since it seemed nice, I only played a bit, while my older brother who played it for like 8 years, was a GIGANTIC fan, and a massive RvR master, no doubt. But the PvE... Meh.

This thread is destined to go downhill very fast. And, sadly, it has nothing to do with the points you make out.

It's simply because you start the post with "DAOC has been undeniably the best PVP MMORPG for the last ten years." I think that's all people are going to focus on and simply ignore the rest.

Proving once again that first impressions are the most important ones! >_<

While daoc was the best pvp mmo ever, i dont think a comeback is possible. Any pvp worth a damn will be playing guild wars 2 since that is the only mmo coming down the pipe that actually cares about pvp.

Well he's right, it was. WoW has been polouted with jerks and assholes a month after release, DAOC not so much, a much better community.

In short, It's not the company that makes the game enjoyable, It's the players.

I understand both of your points, but WoW is dying in the sense that I don't enjoy the content. DAOC added ML's for people who complained about no PVE content, and ML9 was much harder than H-Rag (of which whom I killed before quitting). This game is still one of the best PVP games out there, but I want more people to play so instead of 500 vs 480 vs 538 (random numbers, but I've seen larger than that in one fight) it's easily doubled. There was no lag, and the PVP was great except I want to see MORE players..

As to your comment about WarHammer, that was a side-project that EA forced after they bought out Mythic, the company itself is focused more on DAOC.

Warhammer online is the same thing but newer and it died too even though it was the best pvp game out there. Now they are scrapping WAR and making ROH which takes all the models and shit from WAR and making it into an Arena/BG Moba. Gonna be awesome,

The main selling point for me to return is my level 24 and 39 twinks let alone the obvious 800 + player keepwarfares. I enjoyed 'never ending' battlegrounds in which you leveled. Where do you go wrong with leveling off killing people not just completing objectives?!

SWTOR's PvP is being made by Mythic. Blizzard hired them specifically to design it. So. Make that TWO MMO's.

Couple points I want to make here.

First of all, in my 15 years of playing MMOs (DAoC included) I have never experienced one to "come back" after its peak, so no, people won't go back to it. Its outdated.

Secondly, saying DAoC had the best pvp ever is such a relative term. I really wish people wouldn't use such terms. In my personal opinion, Mass zerg PvP (RVR on DAoC) wasn't the best pvp ever (for me). The game which I have had the most fun pvping on was Ultima Online before Age of Shadows expansion. Personal 1v1 combat was amazing. You could also do some decent 2v2 or 3v3 combat.

Thats just my opinion, see? I don't think zerg pvp is the best, I think up close and personal (where you kow you are making a huge difference) is where its at.

When you put 'undeniably' and an opinion in the same sentence like that, it's basically automatically wrong.

No, OP, I don't think there's much chance at all it will come back, it's an even older game than WoW, and most people just don't give a crap about PvP.

I'm on the SWTOR beta, and the PVP is NOT made by Mythic, trust me when I say the PVP in SWTOR will never.. EVER.. compare to DAOC

Also; I just want to know; WOULD you return to/join DAOC if you were offered free levels, and a guild to RVR with? The game is fantastic, gear helps but is irrelevant because your guild members can purchase all top end gear for you and all the top end players don't need their BP's anymore so everyone gets geared, and the community is fantastic, it's just lacking people

Actually Mythic, which made DAoC, was purchased by EA during WAR:O production and was renamed to EA Mythic. The studio is now part of Bioware/Mythic which are in charge of all MMOs and RPGs.

I will assume Blizzard was a typo for Biorware :P (dunno how you can mix the 2 though^^)

[edit] Oh and Mythic was goign to release WAR:O before EA bought them. After the purchase they spend an extra 6month to a year for extra development due to the funds given by EA.

To each their own and I respect your opinion, I enjoyed the 1v1's in DAOC also on that point, because gear didn't matter. It was all about player skill, nothing was 'OP' (except for Anamist's pre nerf) and it took so much skill to perfectly 'own' your class.

The fact that you don't enjoy it, doesn't mean that it's dying btw. And Warhamemr Online was much much MUCH more than a "side-project", it was one of the most anticipated mmorpgs ever, but it hit rock bottom due to the lack of endgame.

WoW is dying though. They've now lost arguably their BEST PVP players, one of which being Reckful who is now a member of the DAOC community. Including the more recent 2 million sub drop in the last 8 months, Blizzard is really falling behind, and the main point of this thread is; will DAOC prevail in the end? With mostly PVP/casual players quitting, will DAOC come in and snatch people up because you don't need to play it 10 + hours a week to be "good"? Old and good, the graphics keep getting updated and the game is always different!

  18. #18
Why is everyone so convinced that WoW is dying? Sure it lost about a mil subs, but they are still at their peak. 11mil....if WoW is dying, it is dying very slowwwwwwwww

  19. #19
As good as DAoC was, it's too old now to make any kind of decent comeback, if they ever made a DAoC2 it would have a better chance.

If I had to go back to an older game, I'd rather be playing Asherons Call...

Why would they remake a game that only have 4 thousand players on average? If those "two million lost subscribers" went to DAOC, then a DAOC2 would be imminent, and THAT would KILL everything.
