[Books] Book ideas for a school project.

In my English class at my high school, I've been asked to read a modern/post-modern book from a selection of authors, and write a report on it.
    The authors are:
    F. Scott Fitzgerald
    Langston Hughes
    Ernest Hemingway
    Gertrude Stein
    Zora Neale Hurston
    Richard Wright
    Hart Crane
    William Faulkner
    John Steinbeck
    Sherwood Anderson
    Truman Capote
    Willa Cather
    Countee Cullen
    H.P. Lovecraft
    Marianne Moore
    Simon Ortiz
    Anne Sexton
    Shelby Stephenson
    Wallace Stevens
    Sinclair Lewis
    John Dos Passos
    Eugene O'Neill
    Thornton Wilder
    Clifford Odets

I'm familiar with the works of a few of these authors, but I was just wondering if any of you guys in the MMO-Champ community have any good suggestions of books by any of these authors that would be enjoyable and make for a good project. Thanks!

I hate english (I like reading though), but my favorite books from high school were The House of the Spirits and All Quiet on the Western Front. Don't know if those are in the applicable category (modern/post-modern) but I liked them a lot (I disliked most all other school books; scarlet letter, house on mango street, shakespeare, etc.)

Thanks for the suggestions, I've read AQotWF, but it has to be a book from one of the author's listed.

    F. Scott Fitzgerald - Great Gatsby
Ernest Hemingway - For whom the bell tolls
William Faulkner - not really sure, Go Down Moses is the only one I have read. A confusing book to go through by yourself though.
John Steinbeck - Grapes of wrath or of mice and men. haven't read either
Truman Capote - In Cold Blood
    Willa Cather - My Antonia

Are my recommendations for those authors. Great Gatsby and My Antonia are likely my primary recommendations. Great Gatsby is a book everyone should read

To bad you don't tell us what books you LIKE to read And to bad they limit your choices!

John Steinbeck - Of mice and men is a good choice.. Also there's a movie made with John Malcovich in a lead role that's a good watch
    H. P. Lovecraft - MANY great horror/fiction books The Call of Cthulu, Dagon, The Whisperer in Darkness...

If you had unlimited choice I'd recomend a few INCREDIBLE fantasy books, starting with "Gardens of the Moon" by Steven Erikson (and all the other books in that series), and then name Robert Jordan, George R Martin, Terry Goodkind, Raymond Feist, Ian Esselmont.. There are just so many

Well I suppose I should say that I'm not really picky as to which books I like to read. I enjoy fantasy and sci-fi, and I'll enjoy the occasional historical fiction.

I would suggest George Orwell to my teacher, but she's focusing on American literature this time.

    No Robert Jordan in there

    H.P. Lovecraft's works are great I've heard.

best sci fi book Dune- Frank Herbert not on your list tho...
of mice and men would probably be the easiest read and the easiest to do a project on
Where exactly do I have to place said items for them to work?

I'd go with either The Old Man and the Sea from Hemmingway, or Of Mice and Men from Steinbeck. Both are very short, yet packed with lots of stuff you could talk about on your paper. I found both of them to be quite enjoyable reads, too.

Ask your teacher if you're allowed to read George Orwells books. 1984 is amazing!

I remember doing a 6 page essay on a single character in "Of Mice and Men"

Surprisingly I still liked that book after analysing it to death.
Can't say the same for Romeo and Juliet

I haven't read any of the other ones (yet), but I'd definitely reccommend H.P. Lovecraft

Only author I actually recognise is H.P Lovecraft and that guy wrote a book named Call of Cthulhu if I remember correctly and that is sure worth reading

I decided upon a collection book by Lovecraft, http://www.amazon.com/Road-Madness-H.../dp/0345384229

Thanks for all the suggestions, folks.
