Post What tanks would you take to 10man firelands?

I'm running a casual guild raiding a couple nights a week in firelands. We've currently got two protection warriors but the officers feel one of these tanks isn't performing as well as he should be and we're looking to find a replacement.

I'm just wondering what is the general thought about each of the tanks?

We're wanting to get a druid tank, as we currently have no leather wearer in the guild who raids. The loot would be put to good use and they can switch to chicken/kitty if it's needed on one tank fights. We're very plate heavy with a ret paladin, frost dk and a step in fury warrior when needed.

However the main point of the thread is what tanks do you feel perform the best in a 10man setup?

you dont want 2 rage based tanks in a 10 man raid. get either a protection pally or a blood DK and bring in a feral druid dps. that gives you the most diversity in your setup probably. try seeing if one of your dps will go prot

Before I switched to 25 man in cataclysm I was tanking with another warrior in 10 man aswell(now we have a pala, me as warrior and another warrior in 25man) and it is mutch harder to gear 2 plate tanks up then a leather on in theory but I would still use the 2 better tanks then getting one just for making loot easier, the same goes for firelands, use the 2 best tanks rather then the 2 best classes, it will be better in the long run.

All tanks work OP, you can do the content with anyone there is no overpowered or universally preferred tank.

For you I'd say the druid is a great option, it'll utilize your loot a lot better and war/druid is a perfectly good comp. I don't see why you wouldn't want 2 rage tanks in a group, makes no sense to me why that would be bad. Look for a druid but don't be overly picky, if a great DK/Pal/War candidate comes along they can also get the job done. Pick the better player.

    skilled warriors are great tanks...

3 amazing mobility (charge, heroic leap, intervene) in def stance
    1 aoe taunt (challenging shout)
    1 unlimited taunt via vigilance
    1 stun (concussion blow)
    1 aoe stun (shockwave)

tanking again in cata and loving it.

I always say have two different tanks whether its a druid or another plate tank. DKs are a little easier on the heals. Paladins have nearly unrivaled AoE tanking abilities. Druids aren't competing with other plate tanks on armor (but can compete with DPS on some rolls keep in mind). I'd probably go with a DK or Pally honestly because neither of them require a resource in order to tank. This would likely give you a lot more variety vs. running a warrior tank with a druid tank. Important to note here that Paladins can remove most debuffs with a bubble and a DK can keep them from being applied for a short time.

Assuming equal gear and skill levels? Paladins have incredible utility, buffs and auras and cooldowns galore, and even significant self-healing. Second place would be a Death Knight for absurd survivability through self-healing and quick cooldowns, but a bear Druid would be a very close third place. Warriors run a distant last - their skills are certainly nice for trash at times, but they take a lot of damage and don't have any self-healing or raid utility beyond a Shout.

DKs don't require a resource? What game do you play? Pallies too have a semi-resource in HoPo. Also Warrior AoE > Pally AoE and if you read the OP's post you'd know that they have no use for leather gear at all currently so it gets DEed.

This thread is getting choke-full of misinformation from people not knowing shit about these classes.

Again for emphasis OP take whoever is the better player. If all is equal druid will utilize your loot a lot better.

For some encounters I'll agree with this. However my 10 man guild has been clearing Tier 11 content with a Prot Warrior and a Bear just fine. We have a third tank, Prot Paladin but we don't really think that rage is something to consider, when choosing who's gonna raid on a certain fight.

Only Thursday we saw a minor issue with having 2 rage based tanks. On Shannox, we tried to 3 tank it. Warrior and Bear on Shannox and Paladin on the dog. What happened was, that our Warrior couldn't get ahead on threat, when he needed to. Why? Cause he had no rage. We then swopped to 2 tanking it, with the Warrior alone on Shannox and end of problem.

So even though a Prot Paladin brings several utilities to the table, I wouldn't be too concerned about having a Warrior and a Bear as your tanks.

Thanks for the input guys. We'd look at getting the better player but because we're a small casual guild our roster is relatively small so it'd have to be recruited in.
I guess everyone's personal opinion comes in to play with which tank is best ^_^

I think we'll look for a druid, but take on anybody who comes along if we think they're knowledgeable enough and can fit the job description.

that's what I suggest you do, recruitment open for any tank but druids preffered, as mentioned above any tank will do as long as they can perform

Feral druid and paladin is the best combo imo. Best combination of mitigation and avoidance and extra dps. It helps on burn phases and the like, which is why I offtank and our paladin maintanks. Plus not having any rogues or hunters to compete with for loot doesn't hurt either.
