Microsoft because i grew up with the OS i suspect, and well i hear mac is bad for gaming since you sometimes need to install windows as a second OS if a game doesn't support mac system which according to my m8 messed up his comp after a while.

O well and the Mac image hits me as a sheepfest that people love to throw money at every year for a new product.

Kolopotho: I will find it incredibly shocking and rare if some guy walks up to a girl in a pub and says "i play a level 80 druid in world of warcraft" to which she will respond with "TAKE ME NOW".

Voted for Microsoft. I'm 18 and the reason I hate Apple is simply because they charge way too much for the exact same thing and everyone thinks its great because it costs more when, in fact, it's total crap. Never really liked the look of the Apple OS either, maybe it's great, I don't really know or care but I will never try it because I like Windows and I'm just used to it.

    Seriously..

    Why this question again?

I mean I play WoW on a Mac, just because that's my main Computer, and I wouldn't buy a PC just to play a game...

But you know what this discussion is about?

Do you like Nespresso or just normal coffe?

I mean one of them is fancy, expensive and has George Clooney as a nice guy walking around in their ads...

but in the end, those coffess just taste different, and have a different price (in the end it's just coffee)

I've yet to see anyone in this thread explain their hate for Apple with any other argument than "it costs more" and "hipsters use them".

everyone seems to forget that the macs are designed products.
the apple business model is not the cheapest possible, neither is the Mercedes-Benz or the Ralph Lauren business model.
no, you don't get a lot more for your money, you get the design and the brand. I have never heard anyone particularly wanting your cheap HP laptop, however they wouldn't mind having your macbook, probably.
there is a reason some people drive around in a BMW M3 and others in ford fiestas. equipment-wise they're not all that different, they both have air condition, seats, an engine that will do the job at hand, cup holders, radio... you name it.

but the inside of the BMW M3 looks like this:

    and the exterior like this:

and the interior of the ford fiesta looks like this:

    and the exterior:

when push comes to shove people are going by the things they own show their economical status or make a statement.
I love my mercedes sl350 from 2002, it wasn't terribly expensive as the last owner had mistreated it horribly and it had a lot of rust which I easily fixed, if I had sold it off I could get a new "modern" car but I see no reason to, I love my car.

OS X is an extremely nice OS, the Apple hardware is nothing special but the configurations of the Apple laptops are. you can't find an off-the-shelf laptop with the same specs as a macbook at half the price. the iMac is a product in it's own league, I don't know about you but the "put it together yourself and get a powerhouse for half the price"-PCs you can put together sure as hell don't have the same esthetics as the iMac does, at least in my opinion.

Apple does not sell their things at the cheapest possible price, and that is a business model. a lot of companies do not sell things at the cheapest possible price, and that in itself makes the product more desirable, i.e if everyone rode around on invincible in wow, no-one would want the mount very much.

all in all, Apple products are nice to use, and I think they look nice. I've developed using OS X and Xcode but for work I mainly develop .NET-solutions in visual studio or use visio to draw diagrams. Apple products are no worse than MS products at the very least, and to be perfectly fair, MS products are expensive as well when we're out of the normal home user sphere.

I'll stick with windows, just for compatibility and utility. Never used OSX, and If i would I'd probably go for hackintosh, because Apple's devices are too expensive IMHO, even though they are quality products.

The car argument is pretty stupid considering that both cars will not perform the same. At all. You can't just say a car is like any other car.

I've been in the IT business for over 30 years now and I have held quite a variety of positions from system administrator in both OSX and Windows environment to lead systems developer for an assortment of projects at Adobe (we dealt with both OSX and Windows variants of software). Windows is definitely my operating system of choice and here's why:

Windows may not be fully open source like some linux distros but I find that you can often modify enough easily to get the job done, and if you can't there are many low-level hacks and workarounds to get what you want. The main difference is that the majority of the tasks people perform on personal and professional machines (including the occasional gaming) are mundane and repetitive; thus having a GUI makes things much easier.

OSX (Macs) on the other hand is nowhere near as configurable as Windows and their chosen interface can feel very restrictive and unnecessary at times. This is coming from 30+ years in the industry and many years working with apple products (professionally and personally).

Many myths still exist to this day about Macs outperforming PCs running Windows like those of video editing and image editing. These are true, or I should say were true... many years ago. Since then Microsoft has come a long way with Windows and so has the software available for it. I can say from my personal experience working at Adobe on many of our photo and video editing software projects that our products definitely run smoother and more reliably on a Windows machine (performance is increased 10-fold in many situations).

As many users have brought up before: you can buy a machine running OSX from Apple, some of them are nice... but for the same price you can purchase a machine that will run 1.5 - 2x more powerful. The choice is ultimately up to you, I am merely speaking from my decades of experience and the general consensus in the IT industry.

To paraphrase what one person said earlier: Using OSX is like operating a machine with training wheels. Apple has decided to take it upon themselves to make a lot of decisions for their users and sacrifice operating freedom in exchange for reliability (even though Windows has surpassed OSX in this department as well).

So if you enjoy being told how to do things and need that little buffer of extra security... to secure you from harming yourself then by all means purchase a Mac. However, if you need a fast, reliable, easy to work with, and yet very configurable lightweight machine (and still want the comforts a good GUI offers over most stable linux distros) then get yourself a machine for the same price that is far better in performance and reliability and get yourself Windows.

is the M3 "special" in comparison with the fiesta? does it have better components? is the steel used in it better? are the wheels a lot better? it's just a car with a bigger price tag, more horse power (and you can't even legally drive more than 130 km/h in most countries, and it's not that often you want to accelerate from 0 to 100 anyway) and different looks when we boil it all down, with nowhere near the 50k euro price difference in actual things separating the cars apart.

yet why do people buy the M3?

just like men want a hot wife (and if you were thinking, well I don't care how my wife looks as long as we love each other, wouldn't you rather have she was smoking hot on top of the person she is?) where an ugly wife is statistically going to be just as good at everything the hot wife can do, we all love showing off what we can afford, with other words have status. not that you particularly have to afford a wife or that status comes into play, but nevertheless a point.

An Apple item is a status item, just like a BMW is.

and I remember watching a documentary with a very angry tailor, not about that he was doing bad but about Armani were producing their suits in the same factory, with the same machines, with the same cloth and the same workers as another company that were famous for their suits were, at three times the sales price.

no difference between the suits other than how they looked, yet owning an Armani suit is still status.
