    Fraps assistance needed!

    Hey guys,

I just got a PC good enough to Fraps so I thought I would give it a go. I can fraps at 60 FPS no problem but every now and then I get 3-4 second freezes. I checked the files left over and it seems to freeze while its creating the new file.

I am completely new to Fraps so I thought I would come to the computer forum for some of your knowledge. I am recording to a separate hard drive (I have heard that is the right thing to do)

So yea, nothing else to say -
    Thanks in advance.

Only times this happens to me is when fraps writes to a place where a group of files is located, especially lots of small files like pictures with lots and lots of tiny gaps between them. Try doing a thoughrough defragmentation.

I am recording to an empty hard drive (recently fully formatted)

It could possibly be a hiccup when fraps is swapping to a new file. I believe it records in 2GB (or is it 4GB?) chunks. The extra bit of I/O to close one file and open another could cause something like that.

Yea its when it creates the new file after it reaches the 4gb cap - its just annoying because the whole game freezes (and thus the video as well).
I have done some more searching and people are saying its because of the audio, but the problem persists when I turn that off too.

get a 64gb SSD drive and dedicate it to fraps and other video rendering software

7200rpm classic hard drives are still relatively slow to record raw full hd 60fps video (shit dude, atleast tone that down to 30fps)

Its posible that some other programs in background are causing lag. Antivirus update for example. I fraps with 80% of programs closed.
    Don't sweat the details!!!

64gb might be a little low though, a 1080p recording would hold.. 30 minutes maybe... 70minutes of terraria in 1080 equals roughly 110gb for me. though if you only record in 720p you can have it a bit longer but would really go for something bigger than that.
Though i record onto an 7200rpm disc with 2tb of space and i don't encounter any lag, the occasional desynch with 0.13seconds or so but easily fixed in encoding.

    Edit: All recordings are 30fps

People have been recording to 7200RPM drives for ages. A 64GB SSD is not enough to do serious footage recording.
    Besides, I record to a 5400RPM drive @ 720p30 and don't have this issue.

in all honesty, are you going to use a 60 fps video? if not, record as 30fps and that hiccup might go away

Well, when the FPS was on 30 is limited the game to 30 also, when I uncapped it to 60 it ran silky smooth in-game too.
The freezing happened on both the 30FPS and 60FPS setting, it makes no difference to the freezing.

and I am not going to buy an SSD for recording with fraps :P. I just wanted to have some fun testing it out and making some videos.

Its a fresh install so I really have nothing running in the background. I can try disabling the anti-v though, good idea.
