for pve there is still the server rivalry. what server killed DE dragons first. but unless they are really hard to zerg with pure numbers, it will be cleared too fast.
id love to see DE be balanced in a way that requires hardcore guild coordination (like wow heroics) from xx% of the players attempting, but no less than yy.
that would mean zerging isnt viable option, but let everyone learn and help those more experienced people that lead assault with their guild

All in all trying to say that PvE or PvP will measure progression of overall seems a bit unrealistic, since some people view "progression" only in what they are working on and not what they couldn't care less about. From a PvP standpoint it would have to be structured PvP since you can not say that a Guild that may have 95% of its members on from 6pm-10pm EST not being able to hold a keep at 7am when none of their members are on means they are bad, nor can you say that said same Guild taking 200 people to attack a keep that only has 2-3 defenders and wining means their good either.

From a PvE standpoint, comparing you can not prevent "PuGs" from coming into a DE and helping or hindering your success because they may be better or worse then how much extra the event scales up DEs can not be viewed as a reliable form of progression since Guild A may be mediocer but succecede at a event because the PuGers had done said event 200 times before and knew all the enemies tells and when to use dodge and when to save dodge eating a attack to make sure to dodge a larger attack a second later, while Guild B may be great at said event but the PuGs coming in have the event scale up while not being able to carry their weight and die often.

Because of this uninformatively only measure of how a guild is doing is their success/failure rate of dungeons where no uninvited PuGer can effect the outcome.

All in all, I really couldn't care less because I am going to play the game for fun, not for competition, as long as I play good enough to where I can do the explorable mode dungeons when I want to (which won't be often since dungeons may be really fun the first 30 times you run them, but if that is the only thing you do then they get old), I have plenty of other games to compete in I want this to be my game for taking a break and just having fun trying to challenge myself by doing things in a more challenging way just to see what I can handle in doing so. But point is PvPers will have a different view of your question then PvEers.

Honestly, this isn't going to be a dick flexing contest like WoW always has been. Sure there will be prestige, but in the form of titles and visual rewards. There is no gear treadmill, no gear that (at "end game") makes you better than someone else with just stats.

That being said, much like GW1, we will most likely see titles and emotes as signs of prestige in GW2.

Well I think there is progression and there are rankings.
Somebody said there was no endgame... there is always an endgame. It is the point when you have reached max level or attained all of the skills or the best gear etc... Just because you have dynamic events and PvP doesn't mean there is no endgame.

Usually progression refers to the moving from difficult PvE content to more difficult PvE content.
It can also refer to gear progression. With no raids, I don't think PvE progression will be that big of a measuring stick.

PvP tends to be more like a ladder, you don't progress so much as go up and go down in ranking.
I really really hope there is a lot of server pride in WvWvW and the best servers and players are acknowledged.
The main problem with this mode is there are too many unknown factors in play to make it a good way to measure performance. Regardless it is the mode that I think fosters the most community collaboration and I hope people really come together and enjoy it.

Structured PvP is probably the easiest way to measure performance without having too many unknown variables. I just hope they don't try and balance classes on only individual performance in PvP like they tend to in WoW.

Yeah, PvP rankings, titles, and emotes will probably be the biggest measure in one's skill/prestige/what have you. In GW1 people who obtained the Hero rank (competing in the Hall of Heroes) got a special emote every tier of the title. There were also ranked matches and monthly tournaments. I imagine we'll see some returning features.

Why is it such a hard concept to grasp that some people have a competitive nature and enjoy competing against top tier players and winning? I mean, is it really all that complicated?

I really hate those "RL trolls."

We get it, it's a video game. Go away.

I have always thought PvP has been top of the food chain. There is a limit to the difficulty to a A.I. in most MMO's, but in a PVP system there is always room for the cap to get higher as the general player base improves. Hopefully people won't develop WoW syndrome when it comes to wait times for WvW and cry when they have to wait more than 15 minutes to be handed a reward.
    You know the thing...
