Need advice, Parents think just because my homework is done on a PC its a joke.

Hey guys, Before i start this isn't a huge sad face thread just need some advice.

So basically i'm 20 and living at home with my parents and 2 sisters. I'm currently studying at Collage in a IT course, And its coming to the end of the course so the amount of homework and assignments have increased. My parents the whole time since i started this course have treated my homework time like a joke just because its on a computer and i also play games in my free time that's all they think i do. So whenever i start my homework all they ever do is just pester me asking me to do stupid jobs around the house *I don't mind helping out, this isn't what im complaining about* and when i try to tell them I am busy with homework they always think I'm just talking shit and i was playing games..

When ever my sisters do their homework everyone has to be super quite, nobody can watch tv because it will disrupt them. But when its me, aww fuck it nobody cares.. "Go to the shops and buy useless shit we don't need" I don't think their has been a single day where I have been doing/done homework and I have had to stop and do some stupid shit around the house that could of waited till i was finished.. Or been accused of playing games and just saying i was doing homework!

How can i prove to them that just because my homework is on a PC it's as important as i was writing? I've tried showing them.. but its useless.

You have baby boomer parents and you live in AUSTRALIA/

Most baby boomer parents are computer illiterate

What you're experiencing is normal, especially as an Australian.

I am Aussie as well....overseas in other western countries the baby boomers have a much higher understand of technology....but here in Australia if the person is over 30-35 chances are they don't know that a computer is used for anything besides wasting time. And assuming your parents are like 45-55 they have close to no hope.

My mum is a rare case, she understands all that stuff....my dad on the other hand...complete dumb shit when it comes to anything computer related.

    What in the fuck.
The best advice is to move to your own place.
If thats not possible i dont know what to do since from your description they seem exceptionally stupid and set in their ways. I dont mean to be offensive but seriously the first line of my post.

    Not stupid.

    Just Australian and old.

Why do you think our country sucks for PC tech? It's because the ones making all the calls don't use computers at all, they get their young workers to do that for them.
Australia is very backward when it comes to computers, hell ... only 60% of homes in Australia have a broadband connection.....

If it wasn't for Generation Y australians.....no one here would even have internet.

just do it at a library, public or your college library. That way they cannot pester you, and you can get your shit done then go home. When they confront you, you tell them that you are trying to do your homework and they are not being supportive and being rude to you about it. Say it in a serious manner but still somewhat respectful.
"Why of course the people don't want war…. But, after all… it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."

Here is what I would do. Show them some of your homework that you have done and then tell them to sit down at your computer and do it for themselves if they think it is easy or a joke. If they refuse then say their opinion is invalid and doesn't matter because they refuse to see what it takes first hand and are talking about something they clearly have no real bases to speak on.

Perception is your problem, in that you don't LOOK like you are doing homework.

So you need to change that impression. And do it "loudly" so it sticks.

Get a ton of books, try to get them related to your studies, but it doesn't matter. Just have one or two relevant as the prominent ones showing. Pile them up on your desk by the computer, spread them around you, and open a few to related pages. Make it look like a serious study session is in progress. Get in the mindset what you need to look busy and add it to the morass. Pens, erasers, paper, etc. Take a trash bucket and fill it full of crumpled pages. Not blank, they should have some writing. Use some old notes, xerox them, then crumple them up to put in the trash so it looks like you were working on drafts. Get your friends to call, when the phone rings, don't answer it at first so a family member picks up, then have your friends mention they need help with their homework and you're the source of the assignment notes.

Then work at looking like you are working. Sweat a bit. Ask for help, like you need pencils sharpened or a cup of coffee to stay awake. Make your homework look like a real chore. Groan and complain about all the pressure you are under. Exaggerate deadlines, real and fake. Then you might get some respect and space to do your work.

Ask them to help you with your homework if it is so easy.

Maybe you should force them to watch your doing homework.

But at least I can casually play Classic and remember when MMORPGs were good.

Since you game on your PC they kinda see you sitting down to do homework on a xbox. Going beyond that depending on where ppl are from most didnt have multiple computers in their schools until the early 90s +\- a few years depending on a few things. The internet wasn't commonly used until the mid to late 90's so before that ppl didn't use them for much other then a big type writer. For many ppl this is just part of a generational gap.

I live in the US as well and I wouldn't agree with this. Sure my household had a computer in it as early as 84 or 83 so my family has had them around for a decade or so longer before they really became common place. With the introduction of all the smart phones this has really helped pull some ppl out of the tech dark ages.

I second this. Not sure what Australia is like for college/university, but in Canada, they all have open lab for students that need computers with all the programs you could possibly need. Higher education is basically setup so that you always have a place to study and do your homework. It's not like you're the first student to have a hard time studying at home. If you want to get it done, you'll get it done, simple as that.

And before you say I don't understand, I've been going to university a total of 6 years now (not in a row). My older brother however, is managing going through university while raising four kids, while having a pretty much useless wife who makes life hard for him (leave the kids to him while he tried studying and such). He deals with it by staying on campus until he's done his homework for the day as described above.

Its very different here in australia with moving out, most americans usually move out at 18/ shortly after but here in australia its generally not until mid twenties / when your ready to settle down with your spouse. Rent / land is expensive here.
