Hey, as long as it pays your bills it has a use.

And "pumping gas" for your customers still exists?
We only have selfservice pumps here with automatic payment.

Most people never see the customers and a lot of people like it that way. All those people who say 'retail sucks' are perfectly happy not to deal with customers directly.

Today is my last day at my current job: a full service gas station. Lookinng back on the years I've spent working here, I can't help but to think that my job is useless. I am in Canada, and full service is not mandatory here (like in NJ), yet our station remains quite popular. Most of the clients are either very old or severely overweight, or simply extremely lazy.

Today, a lady stood by her little gas can for 15 minutes until she got service (it was quite busy), and I simply ccouldn't believe she waited fifteen minutes for me to pump less than a gallon of gas. Did she really need me for that service? Also, some clients come to get their propane tanks filled up half-way or something. They could exchange it for a brand new one for a one for a few dollars more. Granted, I don't mind serving handicapped or disabled people, but when I see a man in his thirties needing diesel for his farm equipment, and he wants me, a random teen, to come and serve him, I can't think of why he would wait and pay more at our station, as he is obviously fully capable of liffting a nozzle and pouring gas for 30 seconds.

This being said, I think my job is useless, as all the services I render could be done either by a machine, or the clients themselves. Instead of hiring 4-5 kids to run around, my employers could just hire one a shift to stay inside and make the clients pay. Also, I think clients here just like the superiority and the feeling of having someone else do something for them, even if they're fully capable of doing it themselves.

Does anyone else work a job that feels "useless" or not needed in today's society? Curious to hear about it!

Thats the thing about supply and demand based economies. Useful or uselessness of jobs isn't determined by exactly what "productivity" or "efficiency" the service provides, but how much someone is willing to pay. As long as the station remains popular, and people want the service of a full-service gas station, its useful to those people willing to pay for it. For self-fulfillment or "giving back" to the world? Probably not.

Every job is useless to an extend, but it's also useful if you look at it the right way, sometimes I'm just like you and focus on the negatives, it's not about the job, it's about the bad things you come across while you are working, you just gotta numb yourself, especially at your age, adults like to shit on teens just because they've been shit on when they were teens themselves, it's an endless cycle, until one of the future generations decided it's time to change that shit attitude, will it be us? it's up to every one of us to decide.

I used to work for a self serve, people would pump and drive off all the time. At least if its full service its not as likely to happen.
How is this even possible? Gas pumps in my area don't even acknowledge your existence without sliding a card or giving the cashier money. You pull the handle and all you get is the hollow laugh of Exxon executives.

Anyway, useless is a strong word. Niche, perhaps, but not useless. I can't personally imagine standing around waiting for someone to do stuff for me if I can do it myself (grocery self check out is a godsend) but hey, whatever floats their boats. Be happy that job exists in your area. If someone came up to me and offered to pump my gas I'd probably think they were trying to scam me.
