AY YO I RAPED LIKE 5 BITCHES AFTER STABBING 9 PEOPLE TO DEATH, WACHU IN FOR DAWG
umm... i stole some items in a game
you could probably just google it and find the same site
you don't even own anything you buy in a game; just the license to use itIt falls under petty theft as if you walked into a grocery store and left with a candy bar.
it is impossible for me to empathize with anyone comparing the theft of pixels and code with actual matter and items that require finite resources to produce.
It should be noted that they weren't busted for "MMO Cheating" they were busted for using their computer to modify the behaviour of another computer that they didn't own for the purpose of gaining virtual items they otherwise would have had to pay for. And made a hefty chunk of change helping others to do the same thing.
And while the virtual item part could (and should) be solved outside of the courts by revoking the issuance of these virtual items and banning the IP addresses of people who used the cheat, the hacking charges themselves are pretty serious. Plus because they made a fair bit of money off of their illegal activities they are also in deep doo-doo for that.
So it's apples and oranges vs. if somebody was just like "lol speedhack". or "lol levelling bot".
They basically used packet editor to cheat, it's still cheating, cheating doesn't end on aimbots and wallhacks.
I disagree that copying virtual items and selling them for profit should be solved outside of the courts, it's quite hard to tell which way (legal or not) (probably) (depends on how game was programmed) items was obtained, so just "remove" illegal item is not an option, while if you leave it as it is, company loses money, because people already've got virtual items and they won't buy them, they lost potential consumers
