Dear MMO-C mages,

A friend in my guild asked me to get some help with her DPS issues. My guild went into Heroic BRF for the first time today and her dps was falling behind on every fight with an arcane spec (on normal mode fights its was the same issue). She told me that she doesn't know what is going wrong and even mentioned to leave raiding for good, because she feels she lets us down with her DPS.

Im a resto druid myself and have almost zero knowledge of the mage class.
So my question to you guys is: What can she do to improve her dps?

Well, dying on nearly every fight isn't helping. + her uptime in general is super low

Her mana is full nearly all the time so she isn't casting spells so she isn't burning/conserving properly, she's playing arcane on fights where fire is easily superior and she isn't changing her talents to make up for not swapping specs.

Overpowered is a very poor talent choice and I would really never pick it, mirror images is even worse because it pretty much scales with nothing, and she isn't running ice floes to make up for arcane's lack of movement.

She should be running Prismatic crystal for nearly every fight and only swapping it out for arcane orb on beastlord/maidens/blast furnace, should be using rune/IF over MI for every fight.

She's clipping arcane missiles a lot and her overall casts are pretty low, but the general thing I notice is how she's basically spamming arcane barrage and never casting blast so her mana is pretty much always being wasted at 100%.

The arcane guide on these forums is pretty good and the arcane guides on altered-time are very good as well, they fully cover the rotation and it's fairly easy to learn so I would suggest reading up a bit.

oh and one more thing.. she's using so little mana that she never casts evocation @_@

There are some fundamental things which seem to indicate she doesn't really know how the spec works. Which is alright, assuming she hasn't really looked up information about it. Given her talents, glyphs and what the logs show, this assumption is probably accurate.

Dutchmagoz's guide on Altered Time is quite comprehensive IMHO.
The one on Icy Veins is good as well.

Going over these won't take all that much time, and the improvements will be easily noticeable both to her and your guild.

-Not doing burn phases at all O.o
-Using Mirror Images, IF/RoP are more dps in every situation.
-Casting Arcane barrage to much.

I'm not sure why your mage is playing arcane for some fights which are favoured for fire? The dps is suffering as a result. Even then, if she's playing arcane with the idea of filling a certain role (e.g. elementalist burst on blast furnace as opposed to adds) then it makes sense - still low regardless.

I don't have time to go through the logs just yet but will take a look this afternoon, in the meantime here's my logs from last night where I have a similar ilvl, maybe you can spot a few things before I do.

I would suggest going frost. It should be less punishing for a new player - especially if you use Cms/IN. It Might not be Higher Than simmed values, but the biggest factor for your mage Would be to get the basic mechanics under control.

I mean, frost is very versatile, simple to play and not that hit by movement.
Also make sure she takes Ice floes - it is an amazing talent.
