Best story in a video game?

I am looking to play an RPG or Adventure or Shooter game, based only on the story.

So far the greatest story behind a game I have played was an old RPG called https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planescape:_Torment, and I am sad I don't remember much of it. It is just a feeling of greatness, a game story better than a movie story.

Which GREAT/BREATHTAKING stories am I missing around?

Suggest video games (for PC) based on story only.

    thanks

Really among the greatest tbh, if not the greatest.

Witcher 3 if you can manage to find the 300 hours for a complete playthrough.

Witcher series or Bioshock games. You could also play a visual novel perhaps, or a game like Life is Strange. Not played them myself, but they are pretty much 100% story focused.

To be fair, Bioshock 1 plays like ass, Vita Chambers or not, and Bioshock Infinite is pretty generic as a shooter. Bioshock 2 had the best gameplay of the series, but I don't think anyone liked its story.

South Park the Stick of Truth was pretty damn good.

I personally find that games like Dark Souls and Limbo where the story is fed to you cryptically and more open to interpretation do a better job of immersing me in their world.

The Secret World. I'd fucking kill for Funcom to turn the IP into a franchise exploring the stories of the game-world through all different types of games from different genre's.

They did a bit with the walking simulator that was The Park and while it wasn't necessarily a great game, it was definitely fun to get more of a peak into the stories surrounding one of the iconic locations of TSW.

The best of a single story where you make no real choices but is still fucking great? Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. The game is just so poetic. Even the fucking gameplay fits into the storyline somewhere.

Now onto where you make choices? Dragon Age: Origins is pretty great. It is one of those games where you do get to make decisions...but they don't feel heavy handed or easily hand waved out of the story and is not important(calling you out Talltale!)

Fable was also had a very good story.

Some of the obvious answers for me have already been said (Bioshock1 and infinite, witcher 3, planescape torment), but there is a clear winner that most people have not heard of - the Zero escape series on DS + Vita. 9 hours, 9 persons, 9 doors and Virtue's Last Reward for me deliver the best plot, in a completely unique way that only a video game can. The third game (Zero Time Dilemma) was less glowingly recieved, but having come from the high of the first 2 games it was almost impossible to reach the level of expectation.

    85 pala (tank1); 85 DK (tank2; 85 priest (unused), 85Drood (heals); 85 lock (dps); 85 warrior (Tank3) 85 hunter ;83 Shammy (Ele/Resto);65 rogue

Have you played the Half-Life series? That's a shooter adventure game with a good story. Just don't expect any conclusion huehue

The Mass Effect series from both a good guy and a bad guy perspective.
    Dragon Age: Origins.

    Divinity: Original Sin

Turn based combat with an amazing story, multiple choices and actual RPG elements (read books, choosing the right dialogs, different ways to complete quests and much much more). You can combine elements in combat to make explosions, fire patches and much much more (example would be a poison cloud you light on fire with a candle or a fireball that leads to a chain explosion which leaves a smoke cloud which you can then shoot lightning into to make a storm cloud that stuns).

I won't repeat the games that have been said already but I will add Grandia 2, loved the story.
