In PvE, drain soul ticks for far over 10k aren't uncommon :P It requires a target beneath 25% hp and with a lot of DoTs on him.

nah its not a glitch, the spell does 4 times the dmg if the target is under 25% or 30% health i believe and that lets it hit up to like 8k or 9k dmg. Im a shaman though so any locks can correct me if im wrong.

Well, and I'm going out on a limb here i guess, but if one were to assume you were up against an affliction spec'd warlock, this is completely explainable.

The reason for this is simple; in the affliction tree, there is a talent which increases the damage of drain soul for every shadow damage over time spell on the target. In addition to this, when the target is below 25 percent health, drain soul does 3 or 4 times more damage. Add these affects together, throw in some half decent timing and setup, shake, and serve...6k drain soul, easy.

This ability is similar to warrior execute, or paladin hammer of wrath.

Edit - I'd like to note that due to the way the mechanic works, you wont see a warlock of any gear level hitting you for 10k *effective* damage with a drain soul. It might hit you for 6k, or 8k, or 10k, but because it can only be used under specific circumstances (25percent or less health), and because 25 percent of 20k is only 5k health, anything over that is just going to be overkill. Also its worth pointing out that drain soul does not recalculate. That is, when you are using drain soul on a target at 26 percent health, when it goes 25percent or below, its damage will NOT automatically increase to 4x, you must first recast. Giving you some margin of time to react or be healed.

It's like Execute...hits 4 times harder and also benefits from Death's embrace and scales with Dots. In Raid, DS up to 14k are easily possible...

I could also add that that wasn't 6k damage, it was 8k+. It's the damage taken + the overkill that matters.

I play as a Affliction lock and 6k is easily done. My ds ticks have gone up to around 13-14k sometimes in raids. Dont know how they can hit for with alot of resi though

In the same token, if you are taking Drain Soul Damage below 25% health and are healed above 25% health, it will still do damage while the spell channels as if you were below 25% damage I believe.

Basically, if you get Drain Soul on you below 25% health, you are in big trouble.

Re: Drain soul hit for 6k ?

In PvE gear against a standard boss with full dots up by two warlocks, mine can tick for up to 14k. In PvP gear haunt/SL spec, it hits for ~5.5k.
Affliction locks modify it in three ways: up to +24% if 6 affliction affects are on the target, +12% when the target is under 35% health, and 300% additional damage by drain soul if target is under 25%. In order for it to work, drain soul has to be applied while the target is under 25%, where all ticks will hit for the modified damage. That is the only limitation, if they start a DS while you're under 25%, you need to interrupt it as it will tick 4 times for 5k+ damage regardless of your health after it is applied.
