    Fresh 80 coming up

    Hey everyone,

I am an old school rogue that has recently decided to level mine up and play this great class once again. I understand that at high gear levels Mut and Combat are basically head to head except for small differences depending on the fight situation (ads, aoe, single target, etc.), so eventually of course, I will spec whatever I enjoy playing and whatever I have the best weapons for.

To begin with, though, I was wondering what spec would smooth the transition from fresh 80 --> heroics --> ToC/ICC without drawing the ire of my fellow raiders. Obviously I understand that my one major contribution to a raid is my dps and I'd like to be good at it.

My plan is to grab some of the PvP epics (wrathful bracers, cloak, neck, a couple of furious pieces) right off the bat. I imagine as long as I get expertise capped using a few BoE crafted epics and maintain a decent amount of hit, this gear setup would be passable in heroics/ToC? If I were to gem it full AP + dual Librarian's Paper Cutters (http://www.wowhead.com/item=37856) would that be a decent mut set up? It seems that the PvP gear is far off from proper combat itemization so I figured Mut would be a good starter spec esp. considering the Paper Cutters are easy to acquire and pretty decent items themselves. Am I correct in thinking this, or should I consider combat with this PvP/PvE hybrid gear set up that I will be using to begin?

    Any recommendations?

    Thank you, rogues!

As always your spec is going to depend on what weapons you have, or are able to obtain easily. I know there are some options in the new icc 5 mans that are much much better then dual paper cutters. Don't be concerned with farming honor for pvp gear. If I were you as soon as I dinged 80 I would start running heroics asap. You can get a full set of t9 and grab some very good off set piece items. I would recommend checking out www.shadowpanther.net for some information on items that are easy to obtain.

I'd stay combat for heroics. Mut's dps is great single target but let's face it, heroics are 70% just clearing trash, and the multi target capabilities and quick ramp up time/burst of combat is much better for that. Your boss/single target dps will be a tad lower than assasination, but overall you'll help clear dungeons much faster with combat. I'd reccomend for starting out heroics run SS/KS/FoK glyphs, you'll be using FoK a lot in heroics, especially when redirecting threat to the tank, so 20% is a big deal damage and aggro-wise. You'll probably want to switch FoK glyph for TotT or Eviscerate glyph when you raid though.

As chuppa said there's great weapon options from the icc5 heroics. FoS drops an axe and a dagger, HoR drops a great offhand sword, and the trash in all the instances drop a very nice 1.4 speed dagger as well as a slow fist weapon. If you're lookin to just raid asap, I'd say just run Hicc5s daily and go with whatever you can get.

Thanks for the advice, guys! The only reason I figured I'd get some of the good PvP pieces was to boost my "GS" to begin with and cuz this is a character I'm actually also looking forward to PvPing with. So I thought a little similarity in the specs would make it so I could probably make do with the same set of weapons and a few common pieces of gear - at least early on.
This is kinda what I had in mind originally: http://www.wowhead.com/profile=21336693

But I see what you mean about heroics... having blade flurry/KS every couple of pulls and not having to incorporate rupture in order to HfB myself would save me the clunkiness of the Mut rotation if I didn't have a warrior/fdruid/hunter in the party.

Starting as mute is all well and good but once you get into ToC10/Icc Heroics daggers become harder to come by so i would suggest switching to combat around that gear level
