You wouldn't be downloading that much anyways. At most, you would be downloading around 8gb. The rest is data contained on the disks for each expansion and the core game.

I wouldn't even be surprised if that 8gb (which is around 4gb alone for the newest patch) would already be contained on the Cataclysm disk along with the rest of the previous updates. So you're looking at a low download amount.

No, sorry to say but u would have to buy the original wow, download all that then buy BC, download that, and do the same for Wrath/Cata, takes awhile but if ur getting a new computer i wouldnt bet it would take more than 5 hours or so especially if it still has alot of free space. I do agree that blizz should do something about this cause otherwise new people will buy the game and wont be able to play it for hours/days just cause of the downloads. Hope this answered your question
-My advice is to chill a little, sit back, and watch Deathwing destroy your world.
-DID YOU KNOW that the declaration of independence contains 1337 words??

It's most likely that Cata dvd will contain all the necessary data, much like the Wrath dvd has all the Vanilla and BC data. I assume that the Cata dvd will contain the 4.0.1 client, so you'd have to download 4.0.3 and 4.0.3a anyway.

And you don't have to download 39.9gb if you don't have anything installed (I can't figure how did you manage that, mine sits at 23.5gb). I had to reinstall all of my WoW when the big patch hit and the Battle.net 4.0.1 client had about 16.9gb of downloadable data, +700mb if you have the Cataclysm digital purchase.

You do realize that the game comes on discs, right? Even if you were right about having to install every expansion and patch individually (which you aren't; the Wrath DVD contains everything up to 3.0.2 or so), it wouldn't take anywhere near that long to install from the discs.

As of right now you only need the Wotlk disc as it has the full game up until that point. Theres not need to use the old vanilla and TBC *cd's* when the whole game is contained in one Wotlk *dvd*

After that its patch updates. Or you can just do a full download off their website but it takes a long time. The reason the folder is even 40gb is because it has all the old downloaded patches, which can be safely deleted to free up space. Once those patches have been installed theres no reason to keep them.

4.0.1 was about 5gb and then the Launcher has to update, which is another 1.4gb.

The Cata dvd will have all previous expansions including Wotlk and may or may not include 4.0.1 and 4.0.3. Right now forcing the streamer to "pre-download" the content on the Cata disk is only 700mb, but who knows what that includes. Chances are The Shattering content was included with 4.0.1

I'm sure that it would have it all on the Cata disc, well I hope so anyway, my friend started playing recently and he bought his ACC online and only purchased the Wotlk disc in store and went home and he got everything to about 3.x.x can't remember exactly (Early wrath) so I'm 90% sure Cata will come with everything up to w/e the patch is when released,

Any fixes or small updates will need to be downloaded.

Thank you to everyone clarifying this! I've been seriously dreading reinstalling WoW from scratch on my new comp when I resub for Cataclysm, but I was unsure if the DVD contained everything and couldn't find any details online. Now, I know to just buy the physical disc. /relieved

You only need 400-800mb odd of data to actually get into the game because of the streaming downloader anyway.

So yeah Cata will come with all previous data. And even if it didn't the streaming downloader would allow you to play almost immediately without any disks.
