New CPU and Motherboard on a budget?

An acquaintance of mine is looking to replace his Motherboard and CPU, and he has a budget of about $300. His current rig is about 5 years old, and uses an AMD processor. I'm not super familiar with CPUs and Motherboards, but I said I would ask around to see if anyone could give him pointers. It's actually a co-worker (well, from another state) who asked over the company version of twitter, but he said that he wants to use it for gaming. Only game he mentioned was Borderlands 2.
