Not much to go off at the moment, but this could be the monumental discovery people will be reading about a century or two into the future.

I didn't read the article yet, but this was basically theorized by Einstein. When he showed that mass and energy were interchangeable in at least one direction, the general rule of the universe dictates that there should be some way to reverse this reaction. Reading now.

Pure light? That ruins my hopes of making magic from a flashlight, this is useless then.
But seriously, this sounds confusing to me, because I'm not a Physicist, but there's most likely great things that can come from it I would assume.

Now I'm hungry for a hamburger made of light.
They're only aiming to make 2/1873 the mass of a single proton in this experiment, mind you. And half of it will be anti-matter, which will promptly obliterate when it runs into an election. So basically 1/1874 the mass of an atom of hydrogen.

When work feels overwhelming, remember that you're going to die.
Because everything (Read: Everything) you read about regarding the slightest scientific advancement is "Scientists believe this could be achieved by 2050"
Then the media sensationalizes the shit out of science. A scientist *might* have discovered how to clone a mammoth under proper conditions

This isn't really anything that will shake the foundations of physics. All our theories on the subject indicate it's possible to convert energy into matter.
The big question this might help answer is the asymmetry of matter and antimatter. One of the things we don't understand about the formation of the early universe is why more matter came into being then antimatter, when our understanding is that energy only coalesces into matter/antimatter pairs, which almost immediately collide and convert back into energy. But if we uncover an effect that gives matter even the tiniest advantage over it's antimatter counterpart, then we can solve that particular question about the formation of the universe.

Every time I see one of these announcements I just get bummed that I'll be dead before anything too super cool happens.
So the supreme commander game was right. You can make energy into a mass.
If they manage to find out how it works we could be able to build stuff just from energy:

This could save it so much time and also we wont need to mine for ore any more.
Don't sweat the details!!!
