    Computer freezing

    Hello all,

I recently put together my first computer and I'm running into a few problems so I would like some help narrowing down what it could be. Sometimes when I open a program, the desktop becomes unresponsive and then the screen will go black for a few seconds and I'll get an error message saying the video driver stopped working but recovered. This would happen mostly when I would open the program Core Temp and I have since deleted and switched to MSI Afterburner to check temps. Sometimes the computer locks up completely and I have to force it to restart. This only happened once, but one time the computer blue screened when I turned it on and said some stuff didn't load correctly and gave me a few options (I wish I could remember exactly what it said) which include retry, reset, and the other usual options. Pushing retry gave me the same error over and over.

The temps of my hardware are a little on the high side and I'm still trying to work out what it could be. Playing Tomb Raider on max settings caused my GPU to go up to 90 degrees and my CPU up over 70. I'm not OC'ing at all. Here are my specs for reference:

    Thanks all!

The blue screen error code would be helpful, if you took a picture or get it again.

Anyway, are you using the latest Graphics Driver release version? http://support.amd.com/en-us/downloa...alyst-packages The Catalyst Software Suite, not the beta drivers at the bottom.

I am indeed using the latest version of the graphics drivers (14.4)

Computer just froze again. This time I was watching a stream while running MSI Afterburner and all of a sudden the fan jumps to 100% and a few seconds later it freezes. The temp of the GPU was 55 degrees when this happened.

I think your GPU might be the problem, but there are some things you can try...

Try reinstalling the latest drivers if you haven't done that yet. Make sure you remove everything by using something like driver sweeper or a similar program, some old stuff left behind could be causing issues.

You can go through and just make sure your drivers are all up to date, if you want.

You can try and plug your monitor into the other DVI port, it'll probably behave the same, but it's worth trying.

You can try this and see if it works http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2665946 Click on "Let me fix it myself" and it'll tell you what to do, if it doesn't work, you can always just delete the key.

If you can, try and use a different card and see if the problem persists.

If none of the above work for you, contact the manufacturer and see what they can do. Is it still under warranty?

I believe MSI has a 2 year warranty so I should be able to get a replacement card still. I will try those suggestions and report back. Thanks for your help!

What GPU are you using? This sounds exactly like a problem I had a while ago

Another thing I just thought of is to go into Control Panel>Power Options>Change Advanced Power Settings, make sure Link State Power Management under PCI Express is off.

CCleaner is another thing you can use to make sure the old files and old/inactive registry entries are gone. But yeah, if nothing works, just RMA it.

Uninstalling and reinstalling my graphics drivers seems to have worked. I've been able to play everything on the highest settings with a decent framerate and I've had no freezing. I also quit running MSI Afterburner as I've heard of people having problems with that. Temps are all normal across the board.
