Considering joining Royal Australian Air Force

But I'm stumped on the application process, between Reserves or Full-time. I know what Reserves is but I'm unsure of what Full-time entails in the Military. I want to make good on my part for Australia and help out our countrymen by creating a positive future for Australia while at the same time having a nice job with valuable life experience. I'm wanting to give it a go for 18 months or so and see how I feel after that before considering serving for as long as I possibly can but I'm not sure if they have choices for periods of time to serve.

    Thoughts?

I think with the development of drones for operational military needs you will probably be replaced soon so go part time.

From memory you're signed up for 24 months off the bat (4 years for some roles), although now they have 1 year positions (in the army at least) for people that want to give it a go like yourself.

Be sure you are specific and persistent in what your preferred MOS is. From hearsay, recruitment in the US can rope you in promising airborne and really send you to infantry if you are not persistent and specific all along the way. That is the US of course. YMMV

Does it matter what I select when applying Online between Fulltime and Reserves? I still get a choice whether I want a year of service or more?

England let us be meat shields in the early history until the US let us keep one of our own in exchange for bases in Aus.

If you want to join the Armed forces of Australia, Air Force is by far the best experience you will have.

You might want to discuss with a live recruiter and ask them all the questions.

It's been a few years since I went through the process so I can't recall the online forms but all the actually choices etc. get decided during/after the interview process. You'll have the diff roles and length of time they require explained during the 1st or 2nd face to face interview when they go over your roles of choice. Best bet is to apply for full time and then get the finer details during the interview.

Ex. I went in originally aiming to be a machinist which comes with a min. 4 years but was pushed through into officer training that meant I'd be there for 6 years. So it really depends on your choice of roles more so than a flat time required.

The military in our country NEVER fights for our freedoms. They fight for corporate interests and the USA. We've never been threatened or invaded since WWII. Acting as if we are threatened and that your service will help people here is true ignorance and proves how out of touch with reality you are. You wanna help people? Go volunteer at a homeless shelter or something that ACTUALLY HELPS PEOPLE, go to Africa and help the poor, travel the world and experience LIFE. War and violence is so fucking primal it disgusts me. We are on the verge of transcending to a higher state of existence and people like this still think OFFENSIVE WARS are saving our freedoms and shit.

Do they give college scholarships to military peeps in Australia? Might be something to look at for after you get out. Maybe take some classes during your stay in the military.

There should be a rule that if you come to MMO-Champ for advice on major, life-changing decisions then you must follow the instructions of the first response.

Did you really think it through? Did you try one of the usual things (50km+++ marshes and all the Jarhead fun stuff) - or do your experiences end with Call of Duty?

This makes it very simple. You'll need to sign up for reserves. However, basic training is three months and then the employment training will be over a year. I'm not sure about Air Force, but army is 12 months of initial employment training after the recruitment 3 months. For Reserves it's shorter and more part-time. I'm not entirely sure what the shortest period is you can sign up to RAAF for, but it's NOT 18 months. The actual training costs 10s of thousands of dollars for each person, and they are not really looking for short-term commitment. It's not like you're signed up for life, but it's still a decent period of time. However, I believe next year they're introducing a new system that's a little more flexible. Or that could be just for women. Either way, I think you want to check out this site: http://www.defencejobs.gov.au/airforce/

    What role/position are you considering?

American military wouldn't accept me because of legal issues. The French Foreign Legion sent me recruitment info though.
