Future Diablo game discussion thread

Calling it now, Diablo 4 will be announced at Blizzcon this year! (my personal thought)

Do you think Diablo 4 will be announced? If not, do you even think its a possibility?

IF they do make Diablo 4, where could the story line go from where its at now? Something about maybe an evil cult being influenced by the prime soul stone and resurrecting Diablo and his Brothers?

I'm so hyped for this Blizzcon, so much news potentially to happen:

• WoW Expansion
• Possibly Warcraft 4

Wouldnt expect Diablo 4 to show up anytime soon. I would say a completely new type of game (guess a combo of moba/h&s/rpg) possibly in the world of Diablo would come, and will be based on microtransactions

One of the job postings (just checked, production director)mentions something about wanting to get someone with experience directing games in the MMO genre.

Seems like a hint a World of Diablo to me, which while a very interesting prospect comes with a couple of worries. Firstly, do they really want to be running another mmo alongside wow, but also the business reality being that MMOs a're big, expensive and intense to develop and maintain and the game market as a whole does not seem to me to be screaming out for more MMOs.

That said, it would be nice to see someone try to reinvigorate the MMOS genre again, it seems to have gone very stale and I think Diablo is at least a good IP to do that in.

IMO it will be a classic top-down perspective aRPG with some MMO elements (reputations, daily quests).

I feel like D4 is a must for Blizzard to make Diablo a profitable franchise again. Path of Exile is an "MMO" (ie NOT an MMORPG), and I feel like that's most likely the goal for Blizzard at this point.

It's also something a D3 expansion could not achieve (here's something for free, now buy every good looking thing in the game please?), so it feels pretty likely that D4 will incorporate microtransactions and MAYBE even be free. I don't think Path of Exile would have a chance if Blizzard went all in and beat GGG at their own game because of the vastly superior atmosphere, storyTELLING (note: not story), cinematics etc.

Blizzcon is in November.

I guess it's possible we will hear about Diablo 4, but I'm leaning towards it not being a thing at this time. I feel an expansion is more likely, as Blizzard has always been about games that can run on older computers. Diablo 3 is 5 years old now, which I think is not "old enough", going with Blizzards standards. Yeah, I think Diablo 3 still has some life left in it.

I doubt we will get MMO's from Blizzard for so long as WoW is as popular as it is, unless the game is very different from it. Also, it's not that long time a go Overwatch happened, which is the remnant of their other MMO, which is why I believe is the main reason we will not hear about a new MMO. They couldn't possibly have been working on a new one long enough yet, if something like that is planned/on the works.

Don't really know what to say about Starcraft or Warcraft (RTS), other than I want all of it. Don't know if the market wants, though. RTS is kinda dying.

Warcraft (RTS) might be difficult to do, while WoW is advancing the plot. Ignore established WoW lore completely, and continue where Warcraft 3 left? Pick a timeline in Warcraft lore? What timeline would that be, as the fans are likely wanting to play all 4 races again? Pick a WoW expansion and do a re-telling of it's story? Seems rather difficult to have a meaningful story that isn't immediately shot down, that isn't something along the lines of alternate reality nonsense.

The gambler in me says an RTS. A lot of the SC2 folks have gone to a "unannounced project" about a year ago and now David Kim (the face of SC2) has also gone to an "unannounced project" and this really leads me to think RTS.

Diablo RTS? In a world where SC2 is the top RTS and it's pretty much dead? Not a chance. I doubt they'll ever even make SC3 at this point. We all know WC4 would be successful because of WoW, not the RTS game itself.

RTS elements have a place in ARPGs though, given that it's the same perspective and all. Diablo 2 is even being remade in SC2, so there's that.

I'd say it's likely.

The problem with D3 is it launched in a weird time. Games like D3 aren't common anymore. You have F2P with MTX (PoE), or you have games you buy that have MTX built into the game (like Overwatch). Honestly both of those systems I highlighted work, as long as the MTX in question don't offer power, which in both games I listed they don't.

In the past D2 gave us patch content, although it wasn't very often. Even if the patches weren't big people appreciated them because they were free. D3 is actually supported post launch despite people claiming it's not. The problem is it's not supported to the level that other games are because there really isn't incentive for them to do it in this day and age. It's not built around generating revenue post launch, while other games have DLC and MTX (DLC being the worst of the two IMO). So people expect a lot of content coming for D3 when it's not really built to bring us content, and compare it to a game like PoE. PoE is fantastic for this, but keep in mind, games like PoE have to keep generating content or else they grow stale and become a dead game.

Diablo 3 is actually old BTW. They fully intended to make more after D2:LoD, but because of development changes and locations shutting down, it was delayed a lot.

Diablo is still a popular franchise and I fully expect them to make a new game. The necromancer pack is probably just a way for them to test how they want to generate revenue in such a franchise in the future. Personally I don't like DLC packs like the necromancer pack (although I will buy it), and would prefer MTX in regards to how PoE/OW does theirs. Whether or not a D4 is F2P with MTX, or a single purchase with MTX means little to me.

I think Blizzard and developers as a whole just have to adapt and realize that online games (mostly multiplayer ones) need development past launch, and to fuel that ability they need to be designed with revenue generating systems in the game. While I'm grateful that Blizzard supported a lot of their games on the original BNET with free updates and patch content, I also realize that in this day and age that's not going to happen anymore.

If I had to guess it's likely a D4 would still be an ARPG. Not a huge fan of some of the story elements in Diablo (some of it's great, some of it's bad), but I think most people would agree that they built the actual world of Diablo fairly well. Basically what I'm saying is the world in Diablo is structured and setup well enough that they could make an MMO regarding Diablo without fucking things up too much. While not obvious at the time they did the same thing in WC3:TFT by building nations and factions, and you can certainly see similarities in D3 and D3:RoS.

On an unrelated note I don't think we will ever see SC/WC in RTS form again. It's a huge shame, but that genre is mostly dead.
