Living with people from other cultures

So I'm working on my bachelor's degree currently and I've had classmates and lab partners from other cultures and most have been pretty positive. However I've never lived with someone from another culture. Have any of you done So? We're there any cultural barriers that made it difficult? Did you enjoy living with them?

I lived with a Mexican family that didn't speak English. Their son, about 7 years old, spoke a little English. It was pretty difficult to communicate anything. I hated living there.

Why did you live with them?

Aside from the not speaking English I'm sure they were pretty good people though. Most Mexicans I've met have been pretty friendly

My father is Hungarian, my mother is Greek, I was born in Austria, raised in the US and UK and hold US and British Passports (tho I started the process to drop my British citizenship in favor of a Spanish ones), I have been living in Spain for nearly 10 years now. My current girlfriend is American but before I dated a Spanish-Russian/Georgian girl for over 5 years.

Before Spain I lived and worked in 11 EU countries in 3 years (was doing consultancy work) and dated a wide range of nationalities including Egyptian (she was hardcore into the whole Afro-Egyptian thing) and Korean.

The only people who struggle with other cultures are those who are too inflexible for their own mental health, or too big of a dicks and just demand that the entire world to be "just like them".

Why didn't you learn some Spanish? I don't even know why I bother.

I have been living in Spain for 10 years (and I am fluent enough that Spaniards themselves take a while to catch on that I'm not a native speaker, mostly because my -s sound is a bit off still), but in the expat community I know countless Americans who never learn to speak fluently tho they have been living here for decades (tho usually they tend to learn to speak the language eventually), and a horde of Britons who lived here for decades and haven't learned elementary Spanish, who go around constantly bitching about the poor English skills of Spaniards.

Like seriously. I hope you aren't one of those people.

All he said was that he hated living there. Maybe there are other reasons. Doesn't have to be a Mexican specific problem or anything. Maybe the living space just sucked. Maybe it reminds him of some shitty time in his life. Maybe the bathroom was always rank. I don't know.

Oh man. I can totally imagine. You probably spent hours on end trying to convince them which eventually kept going in circles. After many hours and sleepless nights you finally threw in the towel.

Hmmm. That almost seems downright personal. Complaining about your music could just be their passive aggression about you personally. At least that's what I've seen.

Ive only ever lived with other Europeans.

Lived with several Norwegian girls, a French girl and a Belgian girl.

The Beligan girl was nice, lots of baking and cooking for us all which was cool, Norweigan girls were very quiet, pretty much only spoke to each other and some other Norwegian friends they invited round, kind of rude really.

I had a muslim roommate for a year, it didn't come up much except when he was fasting, I'd ask him about it a little out of curiosity. We got along fine.

I see. What was his beef with Rock and/or Roll? Poppy Country is closing the gap.

There were some awkward moments or moments where either me or them screwed something up and the other was annoyed for a short time but nothing more than that.

How did you end up living with so many girls?

See, this is the kind of stuff why I assumed you were female when we had that convo some time ago.

Heh, the 2 Norwegians was just randomally allocated student accomodation, was a shared flat of 4 of us, i ended up with 1 English girl and 2 Norwegian girls. The French girl i didn't live with for that long, we just met on a uni house hunting facebook page because we needed 1 more for our house and she joined, but she swapped uni after a few weeks so we found a Belgian girl as her replacement. So it was pretty much just random chance, first 2 i had no control over, and the second two was just who ever messaged me first on facebook :P
