    New monitor advice - 1440P, 4K, other?

    Edit:

OK so... I'm going to clarify the original post, and what my questions are:

    - If I ONLY play WoW (99% of my gaming) and HATE FPS games. I will only ever play RPGs, HoTS, and maybe like... Sim-city crap.
    - If I care about color accuracy and picture quality (but NOT viewing angles since 25.5 TN seems fine with me)
    - If I was playing on a 60Hz screen at 30 FPS for years, and 60 FPS for months with V-Sync on and noticed no tearing/adverse affects
    - I'm NOT going 1080P, no point. I will most likely NOT go ultra-wide 1440 unless I window WoW to 2160x1440

    Will GSync matter much?
    Will 144Hz matter much?

Would you (in my situation) prioritize a 144Hz 1440P screen even if it has Freesync?
Would you (in my situation) prioritize GSync for what limited gaming I do?

Would a 60 Hz 4K monitor do better as far as picture quality goes, especially since AA can be turned down/off with the higher res?

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OK, so... Basically I use this computer for general use (web, office work, videos) and also WoW, with a little bit of HoTS thrown in. No FPS (hate them), maybe some other RPGs if something comes out that catches my eye. Dragon Age, Mass Effect type stuff.

Just picked up a GTX 1070, and I'm looking to upgrade from this monitor. I got it about 7 or 8 years ago, and it's served me well, but it's time to move on.

Main priorities would be color accuracy (not professional quality), as I tried out a Dell 2408WFP laying around and the reds/greens were flourescent, blew everything out of whack and killed my eyes. Would like something that will handle WoW well (so 144 FPS isn't going to happen), and I would prefer a matte screen. Viewing angles don't matter much to me, as I'm using a TN now just fine. Would prefer height adjustable, and as close to 27-28" as possible.

So... 1440P? 4K? Will GSync make any difference if I'm just playing WoW? I don't notice any tearing on the current monitor, even when I was using a GTX 570 at under 60 FPS. Any suggestions?

Edit: Was considering the Acer XF270HU, XG270HU, the Dell 2716DG, LG LG 27UD68P, etc.

I prefer ultrawide, so 3440x1440. Can get a 60 Hz one for as little as $500 or get the ROG 100 Hz GSync for $1200. Don't let the 34" fool you, you might have about the same height has current as these ultrawide are very wide. I had one for a while because a friend couldn't fit both of theirs on their desk, I got the smaller res version 2560x1080 as I spent all my extra money on the car and kids just before they un-lent the monitor to me

The $500 AOC looks good, just don't think I can comfortably put that thing on my desk. Would be odd putting games in windows too, used to just playing fullscreen.

The dell is the best gaming monitor on the planet currently. IPS screens simply cannot produce motion like TN's can, and IPS glow is a thing even on high end panels. Only negative to the dell is the poor contrast ratio, but IPS isnt a heck of a lot better in this regard.

Yeah, I currently own the Dell S2716DG and it's amazing. I don't think I will ever be able to go back to 1080p 60fps. Not when I've discovered the wonder that is 1440p 144Hz Gsync

I'm not worried about motion on the Dell vs IPS. As I said, my only game that I play is WoW, it's not a twitch based game like, say, CS:GO. I'm more concerned with color accuracy and picture quality.

If you are concerned with accuracy you shouldnt be buying a gaming monitor...

That'd probably be the reason I asked about monitor choices. I never specifically said I wanted a gaming monitor, in fact, of the 4 choices I was mulling over, 2 are gaming, 2 are not, and I was trying to see if I even needed something like GSync for a game that A: isn't going to get high framerates and B: doesn't have a high twitch factor like, say, an FPS.

Seems overpriced to me, but its in their ultrasharp line and think (dont quote me) they come with some factory calibration certification. Just be aware the motion on this will feel worse than even a cheap TN monitor.

My recommendation overall is still the TN dell with gsync.

OK, so... You tell me I shouldn't be concerned with picture quality if I'm buying a gaming monitor. I tell you I don't WANT a gaming specific monitor. Then you tell me "here, just buy this lump of crap then".

Dude... You're AWFUL at giving relevant advice. Seriously. I mean, if you can't recommend something to suit that person's needs, don't get all huffy when they disagree with you.

Whoa there lil buddy. I said you shouldnt be looking at gaming monitors if color accuracy ranks really high on your list, but i think the truth of whats going on in here is you dont know what you want.

My recommendation is the gsync dell, you would be happy with it.

Let me just add there are small annoyances going beyond 1080p resolutions. Most things scale nicely, but there are things that dont. For example twitch app has hilariously small text, text gets blurry on other apps compared to native 1080p, and some sites you are going to have to use the zoom feature to make it look as you are used to (youtube for example).

Its a 1080p world, but gaming at 1440p is really worth the small annoyances.

OK, thanks for your contribution. Anyone else?

What do you mean putting your games in windows? I played WoW on an ultrawide, fullscreen, it is fully supported. Bellular gaming on youtube uses one, he has even done some videos using his native resolution. I'm playing FFXIV with an ultrawide. Pretty much any game is going to render the extra pixels on each side. The only thing you'll notice is loading screen artwork has black bars on the sides because those are designed at the normal widescreen size.

I wouldn't suggest a monitor that the game wouldn't display at the native resolution. This isn't like playing a 800x600 game of the past that cannot render any higher and puts itself in a window.

This is what it looks like: here

I took that when I was trying to find out how to get rid of the minimap coordinates in combat ...

Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of widescreen, it's just too much area for me.

Everyone's setup preferences are different. I'm not a huge fan of what's on offer right now with ultrrawides and I like my games at 16x9, so I've got 3 27" 1080p screens in wrap-around with the middle screen being a 1080p 144hz TN Panel with GSYNC. I'm running a GTX 1060 so I can get around 90fps average at 1080p with everything maxxed out.

If this helps, the way GSYNC works is that the chip in the monitor dynamically syncs the refresh rate of the monitor with the FPS the card is pumping out. So if you're in an open field in the middle of Nagrand your monitor might be refreshing at 100+hz however in the middle of Dalaran your monitor might be refreshing at 80-90hz. Whatever your card can handle basically.

The one caveat about 144hz: It's the monitor equivalent of ruining you for white men. You might not think you notice screen tearing now, and I know I never used to, but once you get used to 144hz there's no going back. Playing on a 60hz monitor will make everything look as janky as fuck. That said, 144hz is awesome. GSYNC is definitely worthwhile at anything above about 30fps.

    Anyway good luck.

    lmao klingers, best analogy ever.

Its actually true too, i knew going in i couldnt go back once i made the switch.

As an aside, overwatch does not support ultrawide.

That's true it doesn't support true ultrawide but you will get slightly more screen real estate than 16:9 with some black bars on each side. I forget the actual aspect ratio you get. It was actually funny a while ago because I was able to run Overwatch at 5760x1080 across my 3 screens and have a bit of game spillover to each of my side screens with about 90% black bar.

That could be the case actually. Not claiming to be an authority on it, just played around with it briefly.

I guess they'd probably achieve their goal of boosting the aspect ratio slightly by crunching the field of view down.

The first post already gave excellent advice. 1440p 144 hertz is the way to go. 1080p 144 if you want to save money.

    https://www.amazon.com/SWIFT-PG278Q-...words=asus+rog

is the one i am using, which i can recommend wholeheartedly.

    Cheaper 1080p alternative:

    https://www.amazon.com/VG248QE-1920x...s=asus+vg248qe

Thats the monitor i used before, which i use as my 2nd monitor now.

Word on G-Sync: Its an overhyped feature imo. Both monitors are gsync compatible but i have it turned off since i notice no difference at all. I have never seen any sort of tearing on a 144 hertz screen and i am very sensitive to these kinds of things.
