I'd imagine, in Curse's case, the MySQL servers are clustered. But if the queries are being ran through without any optimization, you will have troubles when trying to do a SELECT * FROM posts without a query limit for example. Hence you'd assume they'd hide deleted posts by default and make them available for viewing in a completely separate view (as in phpBB if memory serves) and therefore keeping the thread all nice and fast.
At least they'd have a good selling point if they fix the legacy code :3
