Cata was only good for leveling up, that's it. Let's not try to make it a "good" expansion, let it be dead and buried, we're now in MoP.
Howay the lads!
I never hated "Cataclysm" as a whole, I acctually think tier 11 to be one of the best times I had ín WoW. I just hated patch 4.3 which was completely boring from week 2, and lasted for a whopping 36 weeks.
I thought Cata was amazing on release, hard rewarding HCs, hard rewarding raids (I mean t11 was an amazing set of raids for opening an expac, especially compared to wraths t7 which was garbage) and It was the time I enjoyed playing a demo lock the most (the addition of hand of guldan and ISF added a lot for me), what I didn't like was that they didn't change anything from the wrath model. You do your daily HCs for gear, and raid progression is reset every new content patch.
Also the year long icc period had cause a lot of my guild to quit, and a lot of the horde on my realm to leave. So after wasting weeks/months training up noobs in the fruitless hope they would get better over time, we still had no one to replace the players we lost. Blizzard also did a free faction change to try and stop the imbalance on the realm, and guess what, people moved over to alliance making it much worse. Then 4.1 came with almost no content, and I decided that I should stop complaining and just stop playing.
1. They shafted the Worgen and their lore.
2. The new zones added weren't really making me ever want to return to them. I didn't feel like an explorer of something new.
3. DS story and Thrall-Sue.
I guess story-driven things really hurt. The changes done to the old world made me a bit sad. So many cool items removed to be replaced with bland sets or weapon models. Southshore, lack of change in Arathi, and other places just upset me for the lore. That toppled with the huge shafting the Worgen got planted the typical 'they're biased against Alliance lore' idea in me. ( I'm not arguing if this is true or not, just saying the outcome of what Cata did. I'm fine if you think differently and even I reflect back differently so there. )
I think it is that:
- PvP balance was worse than it was in Wotlk, and the new style of PvP didn't suit as many people
- There was no raid in 4.1, though many believed there would be one
I personally don't really care about the second point (haven't even visited the Firelands yet), and the first one isn't a make-or-break criteria for an entire expansion. But that's why I'd guess some people say Cata was the worst expansion.
Cata murdered any inclination I had to keep playing WoW, and I'll never touch it again. But, in all fairness, WotLK had already started me on that downhill slide, even though I mostly liked that expansion.
i liked t11 content a lot...
and then it went straight downhill.
Cata was bad because Warriors weren't fun to play in PvP, which is starting to become a broken record.
Jesus Mode in S9, useless to everything thereafter. Jesus Mode now, more boring to play than a Cataclysm Arcane Mage.
Dragon Soul also didn't deliver and was one of the most boring and monotonous raids in the game. I personally feel the same way now, but quite jaded towards how controlled and... just stale Warriors are. The class used to be pretty free flowing, now rage generators feel like Combo Point Generators. Feel like I am playing a Cataclysm Prot Paladin, which was also extremely boring.
I want to say Firelands failed to deliver, but it would be a blatant lie. Just wish there would have been more bosses. It's nice when a raid schedule is actually filled.
Cataclysm took the World out of Warcraft with it's ridiculous guards. Aside from Molten Front and Tol Barad WPvP.
Cataclysm was also bad because of Rogues, Ferals, and gimp-ass trinkets.
Yes, cata was really that bad. They started the abortion of the talent system, wasted 60% of their development resources on content that takes a day to complete, and created horrible linear questing. They made the initial heroic dungeon content much too time consuming (that's right, too time consuming, not too difficult) for the average pug, which created a horribly huge barrier for casuals who wanted to gear up for raids. They took away raid content with the excuse of making it into heroic dungeons (totally unnecessary, both entities could exist) and remade dungeons that were perfectly fine, and in fact well loved by the community. Also, the assholes took away dk frost tanking, for which I will never forgive them.
From just a raiding stand point, Cata was awesome at the start and then they just completely cut the legs out from under it.
T11 was great, T12 was weak and T13 was about the same as T12.
Mop raiding has been OK, almost too much content. Sort of quantity over quality... just my 2 cents.
In short, Cata was bad for 2 reasons:
- A lot of effott went into reshaping the old world instead of max level zones and raids. Yes, it was necessary, but still.
- First tier of heroics was stupid if done in LFD. You don't develop LFD and then doing this.

it's funny. 2 months ago we had people yelling out at how bad cata was. Now we have people questioning if it really was bad. In another 2 months, people will think back on cata and call it "glory-days" jsut like they did with wotlk. The true nature of nostalgia
I liked cata, I loved Wrath, I liked TBC, I love Mists.
amazing game, and the whole time of ICC...I couldve lived with it even one more year. So awesome.
the 9 months of dragonsoul were bad, but that's because ds was a sloppy raid. no big rooms, no real feeling of exploring / intruding something and no real blockbusting music. The defense theme of the wyrmrest temple was drowning in endless portals and dragons carrying you anywhere. Mists has fixed again, amazing raids so far. the first tier couldnt be much better. (though wrath started like shit with naxx, hated it, and loved the rest and yeah, even totc )

Everything is better than Cata. Cata was the lowest point expansion WoW sunk to.
