What conditions need to be in place to heal yourself with Death Coil?
Thanks.

Only Warlocks can heal themselfs with their Death Coil.
Otherwise, since players counts as Humanoids, you are only able to heal your Risen Ghoul, Summon Gargoyle, Risen Ally or Army of the Dead ghoul(?)
You need "Lichborne" to be activated (talent in frost) so you become undead. Death Coil heals undead characters (you under lichborne or your pets)
As the poster said above, you have to have Lichborne. Really is a pvp talent, but will be the only good survivability subspec for Blood Tanks, but not available till Cata.
Death coil heals for like 15k at 80.. Imagine the scaling, with vengeance, of a blood DK running the flag in BGs, popping lichborne, and chaining 6 death coils for 2340902343 healing. Or pop Vampiric blood, and it'd be 234028734234230983 healing. Good luck killing a blood DK flag carrier.
lol at so many people saying it's not possible... we REALLY need an IQ test added to part of the registration process.
Yes, you can heal with Death Coil.
You need to have Lichborne which is a Tier 2 talent in the Frost Tree.
Most people have it macro'd as follows:
#showtooltip Lichborne
/cast !Lichborne;
/cast [target=player] Death Coil
You can also be ghoul-rezed by another DK and healed by their DCs.
Being Intelligent has nothing to do with knowing about their class. Those who responded with warlock related things probably didn't realize this was in the death knight forum. No need to attack them.
As said though. One can heal with death coil by using the spell Lichborne thus turning themselves undead and since death coil can heal undead players it will work as a self heal.
Ripkit is wrong with his math. Death coil does heal for 15k at times but death coil health scaling won't increase that much with vengence. Also death coil heals for more than it damages so I think your formula is backwards where DC healing*3.5=DC damage) Death Coilcoils at 2340902343, just aim at the alliance and instakill 'em... (FYI, DC healing=DC damage*3.5)
With scaling DC healing will be worst in cata, not better. (lot more HP, NOT much more dps)
Think again. DC crits for 10k with good gear? so DC Damage = 10k
DC healing * 3.5 = 10k <--- That would be bad.
The healing a DC offers is 3.5 times the damage it would deal. So -> 3.5 * DC Damage = DC Heal
With "DC Damage = 985 + 0.3 * AP" we get 3.5 * ( 985 + 0.3 * AP ) = DC Heal
Or for easier remembering: 3447.5 + 1.05*AP
105% AP coefficient for DC heal is pretty impressive scaling with vengeance.
Think of 25k AP, that's nearly a 30k heal (at 200k HP that's a ~15% for 20 RP and you could always line it up with a glyphed VB for more healing ownage).
DC healing is not only possible, but a plausible way of staying alive. Good for soloing, maybe pvp (i don't pvp, so I don't really know), but using it to self-heal while tanking should be done as a last resort, and shouldn't be done while dpsing unless under extreme circumstances. Usually, this goes without saying, but I have seen way too many comments on forums suggesting that this isn't clear.
Stating the obvious so the oblivious know . . .
BTW, the math on DC heals seems way OP. any way to check? SS maybe?
Level 80 DC http://db.mmo-champion.com/s/47541/death-coil/
(numbers in my post above are level 85 DC)
The heals really are that big.
reading MMO champion it seems that Death Coil healing should be in the new cookie cutter spec for DK tanks, there isn't really anything worth taking for a tank in the frost and unholy tree, Death Coil seems to hit in cata for around 30k when healing (non crit) and the scaling is amazing with vengeance ap boosts, plus with just a minor glyph you get to use DC for just 20 rp when healing.
With all the cooldowns a blood DK already has tanking in cataclysm might become harder then ever, having to menage cooldowns, timing death strikes right (remember: the shield doesn't overlap) but we have the potentian to really become the best tanks for at least the first part of cata when played right
See the tanking sticky about that Harakan.
It's for max survival, but not for max TpS or max AoE.
9/10 times you won't need lichborne.
Exactly, I am glad people are finally seeing the potential of this spell.
Your choices for DK tank subspec is either Frost for Lichborne (survivability) or Unholy for slightly more threat. It's an easy choice for me, threat is not an issue.
We are set up right now to be the strongest tanking class in Cata so far. Yes, we will have to think more (most of our abilities are best used when planning ahead), but that to me makes the spec more fun to play.
I have a short blurb about subspecing frost vs unholy if you are interested on my site http://tauntspam.com/index.php?optio...d=45&Itemid=55
if you have a hardtime staying alive i would say.
