I personally like Anivia, and think she would be a great buy, considering you are already thinking about mages - Malzahar has been nerfed, so he's not that OP anymore, and before that he was perma-banned in ranked anyways.
Brand is a great choice too, much fun and incredible bursty at times!

If you're playing ranked, Malzahar is kinda useless to buy now, he is banned about 80% or something of the games. I haven't had a single ranked game since the mage update where Malz wasn't banned in high Silver at least.
