Potentially dumb question, SATA related

Lemme preface this with my complete lack of hardware knowledge, I'm more a software person.

Building a new computer based on chaud's newest Narwhal specs, and something occured to me that always bugs me. Isn't the spec missing the SATA controller, or is it part of the motherboard or some other component? I constantly see drives listed as bare drive, so I assume it's rarely ever included with them. What am I missing?
