Question If you didn't like GW

    Hey people.

I am hyped for this game, it has so many of the things that I have been missing in WoW (and that WoW has been losing recently). Unfortunately I am not able to convince my friends to get into it. The main problem is that they just say something like: "Ah Guild wars... Don't get your hopes up. I played the first one and it had so many flaws. Sure it had good points but the bad ones outweighed them by far."

They dont really go into details about what wass missing, but as they didnt continue playing it I do believe them.

    So, my question is this:
Why would a player that disliked Guild Wars want to try GW2? Which issues have been fixed/removed?

    Thanks,
    Guff

Well, for one, they couldn't be any more different without being different genres and being in the same universe.

If you looked up what GW1 was, and have any knowledge about GW2, you'd see just how amazingly different they are.

As for your friends saying "GW1 has problems". It did, but it was still a great game: one of the best selling PC games of all time. However, it was sort of an acquired taste. Think of it as the Warcraft 3 of GW2.

Bottom line, give GW2 a go despite GW1 or any biases because they really are, VERY different.

I used to play Guild Wars 1 waaay back, before I lost the CD and started playing World of Warcraft.

It was a good game for it's time, but I was VERY confused as a newbie. I had to get people to escort me to the next city as soon as I entered post-Searing (this was before any extra campaigns were out)

PvP was pretty confusing as well. I pretty much ran around solo except for the few 'storyline?' quest "dungeon" runs. Getting lost in that giant ice valley was very confusing (I don't remember the name of it, only that it was being used as a way for the enemy to assault your town/base. Maybe it was the Charr, but I can't remember)

The thing with GW2 though, is that it looks less like Guild Wars 1, and more like a Rift done right/the way it was meant to be.

And I liked Rift... At least, until level 43 when I was just too bored of the confusing quests of having everything that could be done in one single area be split into 3 parts where every time I returned to the questgiver, it allowed all the fodder enemies to respawn. In the end, that original kill 10 of X quest ended with me eventually killing a good 30-40 of them.

Think of guild wars as a book.

First one is a boring genre , and the second one is a different genre.

Anyways, pretty much the only thing that stayed the same is the lore, which was one of the better things in guild wars.

This was probably the best explanation, and the best thing is it was the first reply.
I couldn't have said it better myself.

To add my own opinion on this topic; if people don't play GW2 because they loathed GW1, then they're going to be missing out on a lot, I'm sure.

Comparing GW1 and GW2 really is like comparing Warcraft 3 and WoW (in the sense that it's COMPLETELY different games). Almost every system has changed from GW1 to GW2. The only similarity is that you move with wasd and the universe pretty much. (and even when it comes to the universe it's very different, it's 250 years after(?) and you will see some big differences there too.

i fear if gw2 wont attract enough players it will be just as deserted as swtor is, as of yet i have no idea if i´ll be playing it

as for your friends, show em some vids, that should convince them that gw2 is very different from gw, if not, well

Do it! If I get in, I'm not touching personal story with a 10-ft pole. That's all being left the game proper.
But I want a better understanding of combat. And I want to work out exactly which profs I like the best. And I want to help out Anet in any way I can......as they have stopped responding to my emailed pleas to let me join them

The difference is that GW2, unlike the first, is a real MMO. :P

I feel you OP. But I’ve realized that if (or should I say when?) this game turns out to be a great success, they will all be joining me eventually. Also, it’s easier to meet new friends when you are alone than when you are playing with a lot of people you already know.

More on-topic; I would get your friends to forget about the Guild Wars name, and try to think of it as a completely new game. Because that’s what it is. Almost only the lore is the same.

I see what you mean, because people didn't like the first game, they won't give GW2 the respect it deserves. They'll come around

This is about as drastic of a departure as we've ever seen in gaming from a one game to the next in a series. The only real similarities held are the name, the lore, some class names, and a general focus on smart play and strategic combat.

Basically this. As someone who bought GW1 and all its expansions, I hated it, and can't wait for GW2.

I thought the original GW was pretty terrible. Between the pointless PVE, instanced zones, terrible controls, and skill system... yuck. GW2 is looking way better so far. Will have to wait and see though.

Isn't guild wars 2 targeting PVP anyway?
