swapping from AMD to intel questions

heya there, as title suggests ive been a long time AMD user and decided it was time for an upgrade, went to look at the bull dozer series cpu's but nearly ever review i read said that AMD had fudged the bulldozers and if you were looking to upgrade the i5/7's are a way better choice atm, with that in mind it also meant i would need a new mobo, and decided while i was it to replace the ram and gfx cards awell.

did a bit of browsing myself and came up with what i thought a reasonable list of suspects and was just wondering what you guys thought as im not too familiar with modern intel and how various components work with each other.

that is my first list of what grabs my interest, any general or specific comments/suggestions would be great, i would say im least confident about the mobo and ram, so any pointers on them would be awesome thanks

if you can wait 2 months with upgrading, then do so. Intel is about to release their next line of CPUs that are much better than the current intel processors.

any rumors flying around on how much they will cost and how long they can be expected to last?

those should give at least some idea.

edit: also, Ivy bridge socket and sandy bridge sockets are compatible.

liking the sound of the 20% boost in performance, however with that page already saying they plan to release their haswell stuff in 2013, it makes me wonder what the pricing is going to be like with another chipset expected in only a year or so : \

oh just seems thats how intel rolls, just saw they already had plans for skylake aswell

It really sort of depends on what you have now though. If you have the hardware capable of going straight to a bulldozer, I'm not sure I would switch motherboards and the new cpu. If you're wanting the best upgrade, then yeah go Intel, but if you're just wanting a bump in performance while sticking to a lower price I'd probably just go with it.

would have needed a new mobo anyway, got a phenom x4 atm on a am2+ socket, the bulldozers are 3 and 3+ iirc :<

Same price as current ones or slightly higher. Not "much better" as nzall put it, leaked numbers show about 10% performance improvement, but the same leaked numbers shows much higher overclocking potential which means extra 500-1000MHz speed if you're willing to push it.

Of course all of that is just rumors based on leaked numbers, but we'll see soon enough.

That kind of upgrades have the worst price/performance ratio, and are in most cases complete waste of money spent on life supporting old shit.

Yeah, in that case go Intel. If you had a 3+ already and an old CPU, I would probably just go with BD just to save cash.

when i mentioned "much better", i don't just refer to improved performance, but also to increased energy efficiency. they're about 20% more energy efficient.

Which is around 10% or less of whole computer when you factor in graphics card(s), monitor(s) and other fluff. Sure it's something, but on grand scale wont do much difference. Where energy efficiency actually shows is the overclockability when the CPU runs cooler at normal speed.
