It's definitely good. I haven't watched it in about 15 years though. Maybe I'll check it out again, have the VHS somewhere.

If you're into war movies, check out Paths of Glory. Early Kubrick film about WW1. Stars Kirk Douglas and is one of my favourites.

The ending to Das Boot ruined everything great about the rest of the movie imo.

Also one of the actor was hurt and Petersen caught on tape when " jan fredder " lost his footing and fell while the camera was rolling and another actor save him, Peterson thought is was a good and ask him to do it again but he didn't realized that he was bad hurt and that scene made into the movies

You didn't answer your own query... Why do you think "Das Boot" is the best war films of all times?
I think it is one of the best, and here are my reasons.
Petersen captures the range of emotions solo and shared by the men "trapped" in the sub for their tour. The surface race through the North Atlantic swell became thrilling for even landlubbers; the tenseness and helplessness when running silent kept watchers glued to their seats in silence. Terror subdued by frenzied activity when "ALARM" was screamed are the sequences I remember best, though.
The plot was simple: one tour of duty. But the futility of their action was a metaphor for the futility of war... returning from the ordeal, only to find glitz and glamour was merely a patina. Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori. Well, maybe not. Since they lived, it was only to find other ways to die.
Fabulous movie, with great effects, such as the camera running through bulwarks, and an excellent cast. Jurgen Prochnow was top notch, and was well supported.
Those are some of the reasons it is one of the best war movies ever. Apocolypse Now, Full Metal Jacket, and Lawrence of Arabia are 3 others that I believe are some of the best as well.

My favorite war film is probably The Bridge on the River Kwai.
