I call bullshit on the whole situation; I think it's a PR stunt. No child knows who they are or what they want when they are 12 years old. Most people still have no idea who they are even at 18 because the brain is still developing. I'm 27 and I'm nothing like I was even 4 years ago. The idea that a 12 year old could be in REAL love is borderline preposterous. Infatuation =/= love. When you're 12 and you break up with someone, you're sad for a couple weeks. When you're 25 and you break up with someone, it ruins a year and a half of your life. Regardless of what's going on, it reeks of exploitation. It's really a pretty gross situation, but the blame doesn't rest on the child's shoulders. I'm sure to her it's all very fun and cute.

For adults, 12 years isn't a huge deal. A 48 year old dating a 36 year old doesn't produce anything but high-fives for the older person. Both have lived long enough to know who they are and what they want, and both have enough life experience behind them to make wise decisions about their lives. Starting at 12 though? Each year until adulthood is going to be critical to that person's development. There is a MASSIVE maturity gap between the 24 year old and 12 year old, so much so that I really do call bullshit on the whole thing. There's no way he could genuinely be in love with a 12 year old, he's just an attention whore or a pedophile.

Yes, it is prostitution, I don't care what culture you want to call it, having a 12 year old marry a guy she doesn't know and sending into a legal contract as a domestic partner is the same thing as selling your kid, and don't pretend money and or favors aren't exchanged, even if its on the form of financial security.

I think my overall thoughts on this (having time to think on it now) are pretty much in line with your own.

Kids don't know (always) what's good/best for them and what is not, and they are also more than easily manipulated. This is excellent news for pedophiles world wide. China has proven itself to be a very progressive country in regard to the sexual liberation of children and their adult lovers. There is simply no evidence that sex with a 12 year old is harmful in any way, that's why Spain and Japan have 13 as their age of consent.

Ages of consent are arbitrary, they don't protect anyone - why should 18 be the age of consent? Why is it legal for an 18 year old to be exploited in pornography, but a crime for a 20 year old to have sex with his 15 year old girlfriend? There shouldn't be an age of consent, sex should only be a crime when it causes harm. You can't put age restrictions on love!
