Thread: PSU limitations

    PSU limitations

I'm sitting here, about to click "place order" on Newegg, and need to know something before I do. I'm worried that a new CPU/MB will be too much for my aging PSU to handle, and I won't be able to get a new PSU without maxing my credit cards until the end of the month. Some help would be appreciated, so here are my specs (currently).

    Intel® Desktop Board DH55PJ
    Intel i3 540
    G.SKILL 8GB (2x4GB)
    XFX Radeon HD 5770
2x 2TB Seagate Barracuda 2TB RAID 0 (yes, I realized after that I'd only get 2TB of space. It was already too late.)
    WD Caviar Green 2TB
550W PSU (I don't remember the model, I got it Christmas of 2008. It was a higher end PSU at the time, I figured what the hell. I wasn't paying for it.)

The new MB and CPU are...

    FD6100WMGUSBX
    GIGABYTE GA-970A-D3

Ignoring possible compatibility issues that I may run in to, although I'd accept any input if offered, will my current PSU support the new MB/CPU, or am I going to have to cough up some more money before it is viable?

We can't tell you without knowing the specs.

Also, just skip that processor and motherboard completely. It's going to show very little gains in gaming performance to your current setup. You're much better off getting an i3-3220 / H77 board.
    i7-4770k - GTX 780 Ti - 16GB DDR3 Ripjaws - (2) HyperX 120s / Vertex 3 120
    ASRock Extreme3 - Sennheiser Momentums - Xonar DG - EVGA Supernova 650G - Corsair H80i

    Here
    i3 3220 with Z77 mATX board

    or just get:

If your PSU is of decent quality, it should have no problems with the above MB+CPU combos. Newer generation intel processors actually have a lower TDP. i3 540@73w, i3 3220@55w, FX-6100@95w

Thanks. I'm going with the second set you linked. My biggest want is better RAID support. I'm using a generic PCIe SATA controller which is horribly disappointing. I figure, upgrading to an integrated controller will definitely be beneficial, and while I'm at it, jump up to a better CPU so I can use this one for a media server/seedbox I'm planning.

    Thanks for your help.
