Would I want to use melee weapons? I've been reading up and I think I'm supposed but I'm not too sure.

Generally, yes. Is this your first time playing KOTOR? If so I don't want to spoil it, but uh, sometime shortly after the first planet using ranged weapons as the main character becomes comparatively less effective. That is to say, it's best not to plan a build around them. Also, don't level up past 8 until sometime into the second planet. You'll get what I mean when it happens.
