    Aiming with an XBOX360 controller

So I bought an xbox360 USB controller for my PC and I greatly enjoy it ,outside of one thing: Aiming in FPS games
I'm trying to play far cry 3,its incredible, but whenever I have to engage in combat with a weapon that is not shotgun,I missfire horribly kindof, even with aim assist on. its SO MUCH HARDER than with mouse and keyboard
Any advice? (Other than "shoo go back to keyboard and mouse")

Play more. Gaming is a craft and with no practice then most people are bad. Keep playing FPS games with the controller and it will get easier.

Playing with a controller on PC is always going to be a disadvantage because you don't have those little helpers the console games do. It's all about getting the settings right, but until then, it's an uphill battle. For me, Mouse+Keyboard will always be superior to a controller

Same here. I bought a controller thinking I might enjoy it more than a keyboard and mouse. Turns out I was wrong and it now just sits and collects dust.

I would not recommend playing most pc games with a controller.

He already wrote that he knows that its more difficult than keyboard and mouse. All he is asking is how he can improve his aim.

He can improve it by not using it. Besides that all he can do is practice.

There are a few PC games that I just cannot play with mouse and keyboard, Assassins Creed and Batman Arkham Asylum/City among them. For me FPS games are always way better with mouse and keyboard, and every other game I just pick and choose depending on the control scheme. Like the OP, aiming is ridiculously hard for me so rather than trying to get better I just don't use a controller for those games.

How can he improve aiming with a controller by not using it? Read his post. He wants to use the controller and does not want to go back to keyboard and mouse.

Think he was talking about playing PC games (hooking up your controller to the PC), and playing that with the controller and since it's on the PC, it doesn't have the assistance that is added in console.

I personally dislike playing with a controller for FPS, I ran around like a lunatic in Halo 4 PvP, and somehow managed to get top score (was my first game too), but it generally seems like play and get used to.

The mouse is always going to be more precise than the analogue stick. Nothing really can be done, you can get as good as you like with the controller, but the mouse will always lend more accurate aiming overall.

Yea I cant stand FPS or TPS with a 360 controller, its too slow and sluggish - M&K all the way.

Yeah, that's what I was talking about too. I actually don't own and consoles, I'm a pure PC gamer, just have an XBOX 360 controller for a few PC games

M+K is so much easier for me its repetitive and boring and doesnt require thought, even on hardest setting.I go in,kill stuff ,come out, done.
With the controller I find myself planning a lot more JUST BECAUSE its that much harder and because of it its more fun except for one point: I need to improve my firing accuracy. Then it will be the best thing ever.
My question wasnt about wether its more efficient/precise or not, just how can I improve ,maybe someone knows some special tactic like "strafe to fine tune it"

This. Gamepads are great for games that don't require a lot of precision, but that means shooters are ruled out. Your reaction times and twitch aiming are invariably going to be a lot slower with an analog stick than with a mouse, mouse acceleration be damned.

That said, I greatly prefer a gamepad to a mouse and keyboard for smash em ups like God of War clones, racing games, platformers, and things like that.

i can't give you advice, i always have been terrible with gamepad on FPS game. i suppose you can get slightly better with practice, but it always will be clumbsy and imprecise. The mechanic of the controller just isn't made for that type of game.

Forgive my question, i realize you already know that, but i have to ask, why do you want to play FPS with a pad? I'd understand on console, you don't have choice, but on PC? i guess, with patience you will be able to make it work in single player, but i'm affraid you are going to be destroyed in multiplayer.

FPS with controller is almost required when there are vehicles as keyboard and mouse vehicle controll is 100% ass. With dual analog sticks it really does take practice, Drop your sensitivity down to like 3 then play play play. It takes a while to get used to, but when you get the hang of it you will give people using keyboard and mouse a run for thier money.

No, no you won't. Maybe in the shit-awful shooters console kiddies flock to in droves these days, but you'll get reamed by someone using a mouse in any proper shooter. I'd love to see you play anywhere near competitive in QuakeWorld or even Quake Live with a gamepad and not a mouse; ain't gonna happen, son.

Vehicle control is only an issue if the game is a shitty console port, which is likely if you're dumb and waste money on Battlefield games past 2142 or any Call of Duty past COD4.

Vehicles in BF2 and 2142 control just fine, including the gunships and transports.

Alright,I bumped sensitivity down to low-ish,and I was able to shoot fairly well with aim assist turned down.
1 day later I find myself bumping sensitivity up every now and then slowly, and if I see a tiger charging towards me I can just kill it //can shoot with sniper rifles okayish and I can handle 2-3 enemies close range.
    Still not M+K,but progressing!

You're freaking out a litte bit too much about this lol. Oh and about the Quake and being competitive, sure gamepads will never be the BEST but here is a guy using one against a fairly skilled player.
    Guess it has already happened?
