Well, the X chromosome (or rather, two X's) makes you a female, and Y (X+ an Y, we all have 1 X) makes you male.

Different mega evolutions, different legendary Pokemon and some Pokemon are exclusively in either X or Y.

Only difference is the Pokemon you can get, but it doesn't matter much. All the ways to trade, and the friend safari mean you can get anything you want. Throw in breeding and leveling with OPShare, it's just preference between X and Y themselves.

Yep, and friend safari even lets you get starters which you could trade for most legendaries anyways. :P
