I've been playing this game for far too long, throughout my playtime I would encounter said 'underperformers' via dungeon finder and such. I think it might have been Wotlk by the time I was fed up trying to help them. There are sooooooo many tools/websites that offer help, why should I waste my time when they could easily have googled "fire mage rotation" and been mildly successful.
I hate looking at skada and seeing 1, if not all dps under the tank.
Want to see some bad dps? queue random 80+ dungeons, bam.
37k dps Affli Lock...in ToT LFR
Decided to help out a random MSV10 Normal I saw in trade chat stuck at Elegon. After we finished I found out the reason they were stuck, they were carrying a 36k DPS Hunter and 40k DPS Warrior, after 9 stacks. Both were 490+ ilvl. My brain about melted.
I haven't seen sub-10k but I ran a 5man a couple of weeks ago with a Hunter that did something like 15k. Worst part was that my tank friend actually invited the guy, he wasn't randomly placed in the group.

I know some ppl with this mentality, while it sounds all good and fair the reality is that you are either putting a higher strain on ur healers for a longer than normal kill or you have other dpsers carrying your ass. Sorry but I disagree :-D /my2cents
Fine, won't disagree with that :-D

I just finished an heroic with a 7k feral druid. Only doing white and mangle. A one button hero. The sadest thing is that we were doing the rush achiev in Jade temple for two friends who just returned back to wow. With my monk BrM and her mage we just miss it by 11s even with this retarded druid (and his ele shaman friend @15k dps not even capable of spaming chain lightning on packs)
But the worst I've seen is a warlock doing ~5k (4k by the pet, 1k by himself. Never stoped moving in random direction sometime not even facing his target...)
WoW must be a very hard game for some people. Try leveling with only one ability
Lately I ran a Shado Pan Monastery heroic with LFD, got a ret pally who was only doing 8-9k. I badly wanted to kick him, but he was with another guildy who did his role quite well. Don't think it was worth the fight, and risk to get myself kicked.
How can people not be completely embarrassed for doing so low dps?

This, or they don't have recount / skada installed and don't even know what dps is. There are some people who don't think along the same lines as raiders and/or casual dungeon players. They enter a dungeon to try something different to roleplaying or whatever, they press some buttons, some other players are there, shit happens and the boss dies. They probably aren't even aware that the boss has a set health pool which needs to be reduced to zero in order to get a kill.
Yes, there are some players like that. I know some of them :P
Example: There used to be this guy on my realm (he has since transferred to another realm to be with some RL friends). He is a really nice guy and has been playing the game for a very long time. He was actually responsible for getting some other players involved in WoW who I now raid with and would consider to be among the best players i've ever seen, so he knows plenty of good players and knows "how" to play well (or rather what he needs to do to learn to play well). However, he doesn't. He spends much of his time sort of role playing, but not quite to the extent you would imagine. He plays his character the way he would imagine it to be in an "RL" setting. Duelling with him is one of the funniest things i've ever experienced because he will basically have no idea how to beat you, but will instead play out the fight the way he imagines in his head. If he parries one of your attacks, for example, he'll say "hmmm that really shouldn't happen, I was off balance. Hey hit me again and this time make it count!". And when he feels it's time for him to loose, he'll /kneel and let you finish him. It's fucking hilarious, but great fun. I wouldn't say he is ever somebody I want to raid with, but I do definitely envy him for his view of the game and the imaginary world he creates in his head around it. He doesn't even join a guild because he dislikes the drama that they create. There need to be players like this in the game and the community, otherwise the place would be dull as fuck and full of pricks.

Sure, fair enough, WHEN YOUR PLAYING ALONE. When you are playing with others the shittier you do the more burden you put on them. So basically she was being an ass and saying "FU, my time is worth more than yours!".
They are welcome to do that.... when they are not playing with others. If not then they can GTFO.Some people don't want to be good. They just want to have fun pressing buttons.

Pre lvl 40 on my first character in BC (hunter) I stacked spirit so that I wouldn't have to buy food/drink and could instead stand still for a few seconds to regen!
Someone in the random social guild I was in suggested I try out agility... >.>
By lvl 70 though I had already came upon various community sites and already had my steady shot macro ready to go and bound to my mouse wheel. Found a guild within 2 weeks doing BC 5 normals who loved my DPS and chain trapping ability and started taking me to their Kara runs.
I wouldn't expect this out of every player though, my personal approach to games has always been focused on constant improvement and getting the most out of my characters... Even my noobish spirit stacking was still based on a method of efficiency. I wouldn't expect someone who hasn't ever really played an RPG (or even a video game at all) understanding the game of numbers that you're greeted with when you first log into a lvl 1 toon.
It's a fair perspective, though her perception that she needs to read spreadsheets to perform is probably what drives that perspective.
You can perform easily within 60-80% of a classes potential without ever reading a community site or touching a spreadsheet as long as you have the drive to own NPCs in the face.
You can then further perform within 90-99% (depending on class) of a classes potential without touching a spreadsheet but spending 5 minutes looking at a reputable class guide.
I've always firmly believed that performance in this game is about drive - rotations are easy to learn, theorycrafting is typically done by people who like doing it for those who don't like doing it - but only you have control over how much drive you have to push buttons and down bosses. I've had people ask me for help performing at 50-60% of their classes potential who had their rotation completely down pat, they were just simply focusing completely on rotation and not on their approach to pushing buttons.
As always though, some people simply don't derive their fun in this game from having powerful characters, they may derive their fun from RP, throwing random attacks at bosses, or even jumping randomly... Just confuses me how they end up in normal raids though, it's just not the right environment for them these days. :/

In response to the OP, fairly sure 2.5k is impossible for even a clueless fire mage to do, since wanding alone will get you maybe double that. Even spamming fireball nonstop on its own should do 15k+ at level 90, regardless of stats.
I do understand the concept however, after seeing a frost mage pull 12k dps in the Brawl arena and dying to enrage on a rank 2 boss, and he was partially epic lfr geared (5.0 lfrs).
Your persistence of vision does not come without great sacrifice. Let go of the tangible mass of your mind, it is only an illusion. There is no escape.. For the soul burns on everlasting encapsulated within infinite time. A thousand year journey at the blink of an eye... Humanity is dust..
