    About history.

Hi everyone, today I come to ya with a... troublesome problem. Well, troublesome for myself, we'll see how hard this nut is actually
    to crack.

    so... long story short;
how do you view internet history that has been deleted normaly or done during incognito-window mode? without programs that is. On windows 7 & 8.
would be mighty fine with an answer to that!

Pretty sure you can't, to be honest. That's sort of the point of those. History is a file that is updated, so if it's changed, it's changed. Incognito mode specifically does not record that information.

Theoretically you could get website visiting information from your ISP, possibly (or at least the websites your IP has connected to), however I don't think that is possible without a federal warrant.

Reading what you've done during incognito mode requires some high tech memory scanner tools that FBI, CIA, NSA and some other well funded organizations can afford, but it is indeed possible if somebody uses the computer right after you. Not easy at all.

Getting into deleted browser history is lot easier if you can use some undelete tools on the C drive as the files will be (mostly) recoverable there. SSD makes big difference on this in both good and bad, as recovering deleted files from SSD is significantly harder.

Of course is the computer is set to log everything, or internet traffic is directed through some proxy server, everything will be saved outside of browser's reach and is easily recoverable.

Hm, well Im 100% sure it's possible and quite certain my gf does not have FBI/CIA/NSA funding to do it. I Just have no clue HOW she does it.

(Please leave moral judgement out of it, this is me trying to make a suprise for her and she is one crafty woman I tell ya...)

Well, thats a bit different situation. She might have a keylogger or something installed to track stuff.

It's totally doable with some spyware tool. Those are widely sold in the USA for parents snooping on their kids internet browsing or for catching cheating spouses. Probably it's installed as web proxy and logs all traffic that way, should be visible from browser's proxy settings. Possibly logs keystrokes and clipboard too so that it sees what web adresses you type in or copy/paste.

It's also possible to not install anything on your computer and run ethernet sniffer on the same network (plugged into the router or even wireless thing that connects to the router). You can get software for it free and listen to all traffic from her computer on the network or run a dedicated hardware device for that purpose costing few hundred. These things can not see inside encrypted traffic and usually wont be able to open pictures or videos you might have watched, but can log website addresses.

All of these can be considered to be illegal wiretapping unless you've signed a contract that your internet use can be monitored.

You might want to discuss with her about these trust issues and what you both can do resolve it.

Or just say "Hey, I've got a surprise for you, why not hold off on snooping on my internet history like a suspicious person for a bit"

It seems a bit easier than going through all the work.

Ever heard about curiosity taken to the extreme, ye here we are, it's about marriage so need to plan alot of stuff, trips bladiblabla you know the deal.. ^_^ It might sound silly, but the world is silly sometimes I guess.

I doubt she is using something that sophisticated as ethernet sniffers or anything for money, she just have some clever trick I cant figure out. I doubt it's very advanced, just something I've overlooked. Idk, can you look through it on the router?

There's a ton of programs from $10 to $100 to log internet usage meant to keep track of what your kids are doing online, and the most sophisticated ones will work around incognito mode. Probably one of those is installed on your computer.

Way to not read any of the content of this thread thus far there buddy.

As others have said, there are cheap ways of installing a keylogger to check what has been browsed, or you could have overlooked something as simple as auto-fill data and she just types "a" "b" etc. into the search bar to find what has already been typed.

The best thing I guess you can do is to set up your own profile for yourself and one for your girlfriend. You're never going to out smart her, she will always have the upper hand.

You could go to the public library and use their internet. Use your smart phone internet if you can (That has incognito mode) and you just surf via wifi at a local shop like McDonalds or whatever.

Or, as a final option, get your best friends computer and do the research there, but then you have another person who can spill the beans to this seemingly crafty woman of yours.

a program for reading index.dat will pull up URL listings in the history, idk about incognito mode

personally though, i'd use squid logs on a UTM or firewall, you can format your computer and they are still there

also, imo, if you are hiding anything other than a surprise gift from your wife, your marriage has failed, time to get a divorce

I think it was either the modem or the router that tracks all connections by IP. I'm not sure if this is still true for all modems/routers.

For those who want some closure: No this isn't about snooping or watching eachothers back or anything like that, we are very open and tell everything and so, if she wanted she could read through every file on my pc and I could on hers... granted I would have to learn to do it first tho, but don't worry about anything creepy like that : ) (or well, sorry for no interesting story about crazy overly-attached girlfriend).

Quite frankly I dont think she does even look, but you know I had this thought in my head and I needed to know the answer, sort of liek "BUT WHAT IF?!" because I know she can check it somehow since we have a daughter starting to use a pc and we want to have close watch so nothing goes wrong and that might "reveal" my plans ; )
A easier option would... ofc be just to use a friends internet or webcafé or something.. but now I need to know the answer to this, I know she knows this trick, it seemed simple when i glanced at it but she only smiled and didnt want to tell me her little secret, bah! looked like a excel form almost if I remember correctly.

I was wondering if she doesn't read like logs from the router or something (i dont even know... are there such?) I was thinking about that index.dat file but Im 99% sure she doesn't have any such programs installed on her pc, she is quite novice in most cases but just this thing is making me facinated.

Maybe she just has a secret pinhole camera pointed at your computer screen and you are just looking in all the wrong places :P Simple yet effective!

Just occured to me simplest way of spying would be some of the big AV packs with "child lock" enabled. In addition to just blocking porn those can also log all sites visited.

Most likely it's web proxy installed on the computer. Or a strategically placed nannycam that can record the screen.

Since most people aren't using IE, I suggest you download IE10. Turn on do not track and open an InPrivate browsing window and do your deed there. I see this as a 2 step approach. 1. She'll never guess you used IE. 2. You'll have inprivate enabled anyway, you can then probably uninstall IE10 and you'll never have to worry about the histor., You could probably do that last part with any browser.
