You're right they are not paying their share!

"According to new IRS data, the 1.35 million taxpayers that represent the highest-earning one percent of the Americans who filed federal income tax returns in 2010 earned 18.9% of the total gross income and paid 37.4% of all federal income taxes paid in that year."

All while most of them pay effectively LOWER than the people that pay the rest of the taxes. We could be out of debt if they paid their taxes right instead of getting deductions on stupid shit like their yachts and private jets. Not to mention their corporations hiding TRILLIONS in offshore accounts.

You must be really naive if you actually think that IRS would publicly admit that riches dodge taxes.

I feel so sorry for them. They should be allowed to own poor people for entertainment. Its not like the poor can complain, they'd get fed and they would have a roof over their heads!

There's a difference between saying that "taxing riches doesn't solve the wealth distribution problem" and saying "riches should not be taxed".

They aren't just deciding what taxes they want to pay... *Congress* writes these loopholes into law. If you have any issue, it's solvable through the House Ways and Means Committee. There's also no way to "hide" money if they are a publicly traded corporation. The U.S. has some of the strictest oversight in the world through the SEC.

Edit: Not to mention, raising taxes on the rich does not fix wealth distribution. Funneling money back to people through welfare does nothing to improve the economy or get them educated/ employed/ employable. It keeps them dependent on the rich and nothing more.

Congress writes these loopholes because they're corrupted and legally bribed to write them in their favour. The only reason it's just a "loophole" is because they can't just go all out on how fucking much they lick their brownies for money.

When a government takes more than than people require for their basic needs then something is wrong.

Tax Freedom day is 3 days later than last year. Tax Freedom Day

Who is bribing these congressmen with what tax laws to write? That's right, the rich people that lobby for that kind of thing. You know, people like the Koch brothers, Rupert Murdoch, etc etc. You know ALEC right? http://www.alec.org/ That is one of their chief responsibilities. Writing tax laws that get rich people more tax loopholes for the conservitives.

Well, that was just my point - it is perfectly legal what they are doing. You and others made it sound like they just wake up and go "you know, I think I'll just pay this in taxes this year." The increased taxes, therefore, do nothing, as I said, to "redistribute" wealth, as it just goes back into corporations and further increases debt. There is no way to reduce debt through higher corporate (the "rich") taxation.

Plenty of countries whose citizens pay out HALF of their income to taxes. 30% is nothing. If not for inflation, we could have scaled back cost of living and then just turned half our incomes into taxes and we'd solve both our deficit problem and almost completely cover this new health care system (which should have killed off the private insurance industry).
