I'm an atheist, and my wife and her family are Christian. They're not really happy over this, but they know I'm a nice guy and they're happy my wife as someone to treat her well even if I'm not a believer. They're not dicks about it either, so that's cool.
Human progress isn't measured by industry. It's measured by the value you place on a life.
Just, be kind.
I am not religious as at all which I guess makes me athiest? Like I know. I am a very scientific person, I like facts and proof. And I've hard arguements against people who throw their religion at me, if you are you going to try to shove your religion down my throat I am going to shove my science right back at it.
The sad thing is that american's love science, except for when it proves their religion wrong, ex: evolution. People love what science brings to them only if it benefits them. WTB science equality D: ...
If someone's going to do that though, I'd like them to be very fucking consistent though. Don't bust out the know-nothing bullshit only when it's convenient. Be a know-nothing about everything. Ask how we know that there's actually a place called Mongolia. I mean, I haven't been there. I don't know anyone that's been there. Can I really know that, man? Ask if we know that China's an ancient country rather than a recent invention. Ask if we know if penicillin cures diseases. I mean, there's always the chance that we just happen to administer it right when someone's going to get better anyway.
Basically, be a dick all the time.
I'd be creeped out if I fell in love with someone who DOES believe
Wonder what would happen if we rounded up all of the a-hole atheists and monotheists
we could find and quarantined them on their own island... which we of course put cameras
with live video feeds all over.
OT: It's not really that shocking to me, equally yoked and all that. Personally, I'd prefer
someone of some kind of faith similar to my own, but then again I'd prefer a smoking hot
blonde woman with a hint of an accent and an affinity for historic and modern weapons-
but I'll fall for whomever I will, don't make a huge difference in that regard.
What? I'm just talking about the claim that 49% of americans wouldn't date an atheist, based on the poll/study. I'm not just trying to raise the skeptical "do you really know" basic stuff, I actually wanted to know why your poll trumps anyone who wasn't polled. Because that's how you responded to that one guy that started off this discussion. (I don't get this 'epistemological nihilism' thing, if I'm nihilistic for raising a few questions, your belief in stats must be faith-based).
It's rather simple. All sides just need to accept that the other exists. No matter how different they are.
Or, the person who thinks he knows everything without reason is the dick. The person who arrogantly goes through life without any skepticism or questioning is not only a dick but foolish because you never really think for yourself. I don't see how a skeptical investigation into knowledge is being a dick, but hey, when you step on people's faith, they tend to get rattled easily.

a poll of more than 10,000 adults between January and March of this yearSo, "10000" people were polled. The population of the United States is estimated at around 319 million. 75-80% of that are adults. If you really want to believe that polling 10000 people can give an accurate representation of what 250 million people think, even within an error margin of 20%, then good luck.a new survey of 10,000 adults nationwide
I mean, hell... People trust in TV show viewership numbers too, even though they're based on a handful of exemplars.
