    Laptop / desktop for gaming+working

    Hi guys,
I need help with a new build.
I need to buy a new computer for working and gaming; to work with many VMs (so I think I should go for heavy RAMs) and not ultra-gaming (I'd rather spend more on the working side)
Do you think it's better a desktop or a laptop?
If laptop, what would you buy?
    If desktop, any suggestion?

Desktop will always be prefferable over a laptop. You will get more performance for less money, simple as that. You would only go for a laptop if desktop was not an option, as you would need to travel alot etc.
    What budget have you got?
For a desktop do you need peripherals? monitors-keyboard-mouse-o/s?

    What about <1200$?
I'd need a monitor, but that's not necessary (I can easily find one)
Can you tell me good laptops so I can decide, in case I'd need it instead of a desktop? I still have to choose (I'd prefer to have something portable due to the wireless connections, but I can live without it)

Close to the 1200 mark without a monitor would be the build below. If you need to cut down for a good monitor (200-250$) you would need to get a cheaper cpu cooler, far lower on the gpu side and probably an even cheaper board:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

    CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($234.99 @ NCIX US)
CPU Cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3 93.3 CFM Fluid Dynamic Bearing CPU Cooler ($64.99 @ NCIX US)
    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SLI ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($118.99 @ Amazon)
    Memory: G.Skill Sniper Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory ($148.50 @ Newegg)
    Storage: Crucial MX100 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($109.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($54.98 @ OutletPC)
Video Card: Gigabyte Radeon R9 290 4GB WINDFORCE Video Card ($339.99 @ Newegg)
Case: Corsair 300R ATX Mid Tower Case ($59.99 @ Micro Center)
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($69.99 @ Newegg)
    Total: $1202.41
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

This would be with a monitor:

Seems i forgot the o/s in both setups, if thats a problem we will have to start cheaping out.
I am not sure how VM works with cores/hyperthreading, if more are better maybe an Intel Xeon E3-1240 V3 could be a better choice, you don't have the budget for an i7.

    Nah, it's not a problem.
    What about laptops?
And, as I said, I'd need to work with VMs. How many you think I could run with those builds? Adding RAM will help?

Well it depends how much ram you will alocate to each vm. Default is 1gb isn't? I haven't done it myself so you should know better than me

Well 16gb should be kinda plenty to start with if i would guess. You can always add another 16GB later one if you need more. For 32gb ram kits, well they are priced over 300bucks so your really need to start upping your budget cause that would be over 1/4 of your budget just for that.

Can't help you much with the laptops, it ain't my forte, but if you want to have a a look at this about vm's-ram-cpu usage.
It all comes down to what vm's your running and your budget. As i said budget is kinda tight to go full out.
