It's a harmless site with a humble administrator. The /b/ board is the place you want to avoid, but only because it's full of angsty teenagers posting porn, requests for "MAH EX LEFT ME FOR THIS DBAG PLS HAX HIS FACEBOK /B/ROS!!1" and once in a while some amazing things, like /b/ collaborating at doxing a murder suspect and getting him arrested.
You want to look at the other boards, the worksafe ones. There you might find a sense of community and have some fun.

4chan is an imageboard, such as most of the things posted there are images. There are a lot of different boards which are like forum categories. The one that get talked about in a negative light is normally /b/, which is the random board, for everything that doesn't fit in another one. A number of things have happened on /b/ over the years, but I have never heard of homicides. Mostly just the odd person posting child pornography, which is deleted by the mods, some people think there isn't mods, but there is. While they are lackadaisical about what to delete, nothing illegal stays up there long.

As for safety, dont do anything they tell you to unless you have googled it and know its not going to hurt you. for example heating a spoon and putting it under cold water. and don't follow links to sites you don't know. The site itself won't give you viruses, but links to other sites might, there is some spam on the boards, mostly /b/.

If you want to check it out there is nothing that will harm you. If you are not interested then don't, there are other better forums on the internet. But 4chan and other sites like it fill a niche for some people on the internet. You can always go to the subreddit /r/4chan to see some of the funny stuff that come out of the site.

You don't HAVE to go to /b/ there are 62 other boards that might interest you.

I know you are just trolling at this point. Literally nothing will happen to you, its just an image board. Its about as dangerous as Reddit or Tumblr. Posting isn't dangerous (as long as you aren't retarded and put your email in the reply box) and lurking is even safer.

I'm a really security conscious individual okay? I'm just guaranteeing my safety and am not playing around. There are places you can visit on the internet without concern, and lots of places where you need to know about before even attempting to visit.
