Do you spit or swallow?

I've always considered spitting to be a disgusting habit and was raised in such a way as to very rarely do it unless strictly necessary. I had a discussion with a friend earlier this morning after she looked on with disgust at a guy walking down the street and noisily spitting onto the pavement. It narrowly missed hitting someone else and they muttered something angrily under their breath.

Personally I'd only do it if I really had to clear my mouth of a vile taste and even then I'd try and make sure I did it somewhere subtle like in an alleyway. I certainly wouldn't spit near anybody else. I take my oral hygiene very seriously though and so I've never really felt the urge the spit unless I've eaten something with a horrid taste.

So to cut my rambling short, do you spit or do you swallow? Feel free to elaborate as to why!

Spit. if people say it's disgusting, they should put themselves in MY shoes, it was in my mouth after all.

However, I do my very best to spit somewhere people don't see/walk through it, like the greenery in the city, a wastebin or a street drain.

OT, I suffer from a couple of repository disorders and it is not uncommon for me to cough up a large amount of phlegm from time to time, so it have been necessary for me to spit it out into either a tissue or on the ground if I am caught by surprise, if it is going on the ground I try to aim for a gutter or drainage, and never ever towards anyone.

I should add that if people have a genuine medical condition then I can understand the need to clear their mouth pretty urgently. I'm just firmly opposed to the idea of people doing it just because they can, especially if it risks landing on other people or where they're going to be walking.
